Virtual reality developer Victoria VR has announced that it is integrating OpenAI into its builder. The move makes Victoria VR the first web3 project to bring AI capabilities to virtual reality, streamlining VR content creation.

New Sophos report reveals a problematic trend: ransomware attackers are increasingly targeting backups, crippling organizations’ ability to recover data and significantly raising ransom demands. Learn how to protect your backups and minimize the impact of a ransomware attack.

Ransomware attacks have become a reality for businesses of all scales worldwide, but a new report from cybersecurity firm Sophos reveals an even more disturbing trend: attackers are increasingly targeting backups.

Backup, as we know it, is one thing that keeps victim businesses from paying ransom to ransomware groups. However, the new tactic of targeting backup data cripples an organization’s ability to recover data without paying the ransom, seriously increasing the pressure to meet the demands of cybercriminals.

As observed before, companies such as Accenture and Bykea have thwarted ransomware attacks by leveraging backups and dismissing ransom demands. However, there have also been examples where the backup itself was encrypted.

The Sophos report (PDF), titled “The impact of compromised backups on ransomware outcomes,” is based on a survey of nearly 3,000 IT professionals whose organizations fell victim to ransomware attacks in the past year. The findings reveal a concerning reality, emphasizing the role of strong backup security in fighting cyber extortion.

****Near-Universal Backup Targeting:****

The report exposes the pervasiveness of backup targeting by attackers. A staggering 94% of surveyed organizations reported that attackers attempted to compromise their backups during the attack.

This attempt rate goes even higher in specific sectors, with government and media organizations experiencing a near-perfect 99% rate of attempted backup compromise.

****Compromised Backups, Soaring Costs:****

The effects of losing access to backups are harsh. The report found that organizations unable to recover data from backups due to the attack were forced to pay significantly higher ransoms.

On average, these organizations paid more than double the ransom amount compared to those with secure backups. This results in an average ransom demand of $2.3 million for those with compromised backups, compared to $1 million for those with secure backups.

****Importance of Backup Security:****

The Sophos report also emphasizes the role secure backups play in mitigating ransomware damage. Having a reliable, isolated backup system that’s not vulnerable to the initial attack allows organizations to restore data quickly and minimize downtime.

This not only reduces financial losses from operational disruptions but also weakens the attacker’s leverage, potentially leading to lower ransom demands or even complete avoidance of payment.

Commenting on this, Chad Graham, Manager of the Cyber Incident Response Team (CIRT) at Critical Start emphasised that regularly backing up data ensures business continuity and protects against cyber threats like ransomware.

“Performing backups for computer information systems is a crucial cyber risk mitigation strategy because it ensures the continuity of business operations and data integrity in the event of a cyberattack, system failure, or data corruption. Having offline backups is particularly important, as they are immune to online threats like ransomware attacks, which can encrypt or destroy online data,” Chad advised.

He further explained that “Despite its simplicity and effectiveness, the practice of regularly creating and updating backups is often overlooked, leading to significant vulnerabilities in an organization’s cybersecurity posture. This oversight can result in catastrophic data loss and operational downtime, emphasizing the necessity of incorporating backup strategies into comprehensive cybersecurity plans.”

IntelBroker hacker leaks data linked to US contractor Acuity Inc., exposing potentially sensitive intelligence agencies-related data – US government previously denied Acuity Inc. breach, but experts warn of national security risks.

The notorious IntelBroker hacker and their affiliates have leaked a trove of sensitive records, which they claim jeopardize the United States national security. The data, leaked on **Breach Forums**, is linked to US Federal contractor Acuity Inc., in a data breach allegedly carried out in March 2024. The data was previously being sold for just $3,000 in Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency.

As seen by Hackread.com, IntelBroker has classified the breach as a “National Security Documents Leak,” involving documents from the “Five Eyes Intelligence Group.” The leaked records now accessible to the public include highly sensitive information such as full names, email addresses, office numbers, personal cell numbers, email addresses (government, military, and Pentagon), classified information, and communications between the Five Eyes, 14 Eyes, and the US’s allies.

For your information, The Five Eyes Intelligence Group is an intelligence alliance including five English-speaking countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The alliance aims to share intelligence and collaborate on signals intelligence (SIGINT) gathering, surveillance, and **cybersecurity activities**.

****Background of the alleged Acuity Inc. data breach****

On March 4, 2024, **Hackread.com published an exclusive report** on a data breach allegedly involving Acuity Inc., a federal contractor based in Reston, Virginia. The breach was claimed by IntelBroker.

The hacker claimed the use of a zero-day security vulnerability in GitHub to access Acuity Inc.’s tokens and facilitate their malicious activities, including the theft of data belonging to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Hackread.com reported the breach to GitHub, Acuity Inc., ICE, and USCIS. However, none of the organizations responded to the report. In contrast, Homeland Security, responding to a third-party media site that had not reported on the incident or analyzed the data, denied IntelBroker’s claims and labelled the breach as false, categorizing the leaked information as “test demos for vendors” with fake names and contact information used solely to provide examples of received data.

****Now What?****

Despite the US Government’s version that the data leak is fake, Hackread.com’s analysis suggests that the publicly leaked information remains highly consequential. Even if the data is fabricated, it exposes the modus operandi of US intelligence agencies and their allies, potentially risking their operational security and strategies.

The hacker’s origins and affiliates are unknown; however, according to the United States government, IntelBroker is alleged to be the perpetrator behind one of the **T-Mobile data breaches**.

IntelBroker Leaks Alleged National Security Data Tied to US Contractor Acuity Inc.

Ibis Budget guests were left vulnerable after a security flaw in self-check-in kiosks exposed room access codes. Learn how this major security breach could have impacted travelers and what steps you can take to stay safe.

A data security issue at Ibis Budget hotels across Europe raised concerns for guest safety after a vulnerability in their self-check-in kiosks allowed anyone to see room access codes.

The issue came to light in late 2023 when a team of hackers from Swiss firm Pentagrid discovered the flaw in a kiosk at an Ibis Budget hotel in Germany. Their investigation revealed that the kiosks displayed the room access codes on the screen after check-in, potentially compromising the security of any guest who used the kiosk.

While Pentagrid only confirmed the vulnerability in a single German hotel, they believe it likely impacted a wider range of Ibis Budget locations. The budget hotel chain, owned by hospitality giant Accor, boasts over 600 locations across 20 countries.

According to Pentagrid, it promptly notified Accor about the security hole. The hotel group responded swiftly and within a month, a patch was rolled out to address the vulnerability and prevent further exposure of room access codes.

Although a fix is now in place, cybersecurity experts warn that such vulnerabilities can have serious consequences. With access codes exposed, anyone could potentially gain unauthorized entry to a guest’s room, putting them and their belongings at risk.

It is worth mentioning that hotels are a lucrative target for cybercriminals. There have been cases where threat actors infected hotel door lock systems with ransomware, or security researchers identified critical security vulnerabilities in electronic key software used by thousands of hotels worldwide, allowing hackers to unlock hotel rooms.

Despite the potential severity of the issue, Accor has not yet issued a public statement regarding the vulnerability in their Ibis Budget kiosks. This lack of transparency has raised concerns among security researchers and potential guests.

Nevertheless, security experts advise travellers using Ibis Budget hotels to be cautious and consider alternative check-in methods if available. Additionally, remaining alert about personal belongings and reporting any suspicious activity to hotel staff is crucial.

Also today, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) launched a webpage listing free tools and services to strengthen defenses of high-risk communities, including Authentic8’s new Silo Shield Program.

These “high-risk” communities — non-governmental organizations, journalists, and academics — face digital risks that are existential threats to their missions, as they are targeted by some of the world’s most capable advanced persistent threats (APTs). The new Silo Shield Program enables eligible persons to apply for access to Authentic8’s Silo for Research platform, which provides a secure solution to collect publicly available information. Securely collecting web-based information is essential for these groups to carry out research, investigations, and advocacy.

*   **Academics** in fields like security, political science, sociology and environmental studies, whose research on global issues demands access to information across geographical boundaries — often in restrictive environments — are eligible.
*   **Humanitarian aid organizations**, including those focusing on direct support, anti-corruption efforts and digital freedom are eligible for Silo Shield, as their efforts to compile evidence, vet suppliers and aid recipients, and communicate safely online are critical to their missions.
