Subscribe to Comments Reloaded is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts or suspend all notifications. It solves most of the issues that affect Mark Jaquith’s version, using the latest WordPress features and functionality. Plus, allows administrators to enable a double opt-in mechanism, requiring users to confirm their subscription clicking on a link they will receive via email or even One Click Unsubscribe.

1.  If you are using Subscribe To Comments by Mark Jaquith, disable it (no need to uninstall it, though)
2.  Upload the entire folder and all the subfolders to your WordPress plugins’ folder. You can also use the downloaded ZIP file to upload it.
3.  Activate it
4.  Customize the Permalink value under Settings > Subscribe to Comments > Management Page > Management URL. It **must** reflect your permalinks’ structure
5.  If you don’t see the checkbox to subscribe, you will have to manually edit your template, and add <?php global $wp_subscribe_reloaded; if (isset($wp_subscribe_reloaded)){ echo $wp_subscribe_reloaded->stcr->subscribe_reloaded_show(); } ?> somewhere in your comments.php
6.  If you’re upgrading from a previous version, please **make sure to deactivate/activate** StCR.

**Why my notifications are not in HTML format?**

Don’t worry, just go to the Options tab an set to Yes the **Enable HTML emails** option.

**How can I reset all the plugin options?**

There is a new feature called **Safely Uninstall** that allow you to delete the plugin using the WordPress plugin interface. If you have the option set to **Yes** everything but the subscriptions created by the plugin will be wipeout. So after you made sure that you have this option to **Yes** you can deactivate the plugin and the delete it. Now you have to install the plugin via WordPress or Upload the plugin zip file and activate it, after this step all your settings will be as default and your subscriptions will remain.  
There is a new feature added on the Options tab where you can reset all the settings by using only one click. You can either wipe out all the subscriptions or keep them.

**What can I do if the \*\*Safely Uninstall\*\* does not have any value?**

Just deactivate and activate the plugin and you are all set. The default value will be **Yes**.

**Aaargh! Were did all my subscriptions go?**

No panic. If you upgraded from 1.6 or earlier to 2.0+, you need to deactivate/activate StCR, in order to update the DB structure. After the version 180212 a fix was applied so that you can see all the subscriptions.

**Can I customize the layout of the management page?**

Yes, each HTML tag has a CSS class or ID that you can use to change its position or look-and-feel.

**How do I disable subscriptions for a given post?**

Add a custom field called stcr_disable_subscriptions to it, with value ‘yes’

**How do I add the management page URL to my posts?**

Use the shortcode [subscribe-url], or use the following code in your theme:  
global $wp\_subscribe\_reloaded; if (isset($wp\_subscribe\_reloaded)){ echo ‘Subscribe“;

**Can I move the subscription checkbox to another position?**

Yes! Just disable the corresponding option under Settings > Comment Form and then add the following code where you want to display the checkbox:  
stcr->subscribe\_reloaded\_show(); } ?>

**What if after update to the version 141024 I still see plain HTML messages?**

The information of your configuration needs to be updated. Go to the Subscribe to Comments Reloaded settings and click the Save Changes button on the tab  
where you have you messages with HTML.

**How to generate a new Key for my Site?**

Just go to the Options Panel and click the generate button. By generating a new key you prevent the spam bots to steal your links.

People from my website, who made subscription for comments, said that in e-mail they get the IP of user, who left the comment. I\`m going to find another plugin.

I have the v.210315 I translated it into Italian 100% with Loco translated, but I noticed that in the plugin there are still many entries in English.

CVE-2022-29414: Subscribe To Comments Reloaded

International cybersecurity authorities have published an overview of the most routinely exploited vulnerabilities of 2021.

A joint Cybersecurity Advisory, coauthored by cybersecurity authorities of the United States (CISA, NSA, and FBI), Australia (ACSC), Canada (CCCS), New Zealand (NZ NCSC), and the United Kingdom (NCSC-UK) has detailed the top 15 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) routinely exploited by malicious cyber actors in 2021, as well as other CVEs frequently exploited.

Publicly disclosed computer security flaws are listed in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database. Its goal is to make it easier to share data across separate vulnerability capabilities (tools, databases, and services). These are the CVEs that made it into the top 10.

**1\. Log4Shell**

CVE-2021-44228, commonly referred to as Log4Shell or Logjam. This was a software flaw in the Apache Log4j logging utility. A logger is a piece of software that logs every event that happens in a computer system. The records it produces are useful for IT and security folks to trace errors or check any abnormal behavior within a system.

When Log4Shell emerged in December 2021, what caught many by surprise was the enormous number of applications and web services, including those offered by Twitter, Apple, Google, Amazon, Steam, and Microsoft, among others, that were relying on Log4j, many of which inherited the vulnerability.

This made for an exceptionally broad attack surface. Combine that with an incredibly easy to use exploit and there should be no surprise that this vulnerability made it to the top of the list.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has launched an open source scanner to find applications that are vulnerable to the Log4j vulnerabilities listed as CVE-2021-44228 and CVE-2021-45046. The CISA Log4j scanner is based on other open source tools and supports scanning lists of URLs, several fuzzing options, DNS callback, and payloads to circumvent web-application firewalls.

**2\. CVE-2021-40539**

CVE-2021-40539 is a REST API authentication bypass vulnerability in ManageEngine’s single sign-on (SSO) solution with resultant remote code execution (RCE) that exists in Zoho ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus version 6113 and prior. When word of this vulnerability came out it was already clear that it was being exploited in the wild. Zoho remarked that it was noticing indications of this vulnerability being exploited. Other researchers chimed in saying the attacks had thus far been highly targeted and limited, and possibly the work of a single threat actor. It was clear from the start that APT threat-actors were likely among those exploiting the vulnerability.

The vulnerability allows an attacker to gain unauthorized access to the product through REST API endpoints by sending a specially crafted request. This allows attackers to carry out subsequent attacks resulting in RCE.

For those that have never heard of this software, it’s a self-service password management and single sign-on (SSO) solution for Active Directory (AD) and cloud apps. Which means that any attacker that is able to exploit this vulnerability immediately has access to some of the most critical parts of a corporate network. A patch for this vulnerability was made available on September 7, 2021. Users were advised to update to ADSelfService Plus build 6114. The FBI, CISA, and CGCYBER also strongly urged organizations to make sure that ADSelfService Plus was not directly accessible from the Internet.

The ManageEngine site has specific instructions on how to identify and update vulnerable installations.

**3\. ProxyShell**

Third on the list are 3 vulnerabilities that we commonly grouped together and referred to as ProxyShell. CVE-2021-34523, CVE-2021-34473, and CVE-2021-31207.

The danger lies in the fact that these three vulnerabilities can be chained together to allow a remote attacker to run code on an unpatched Microsoft Exchange server. Attackers use them as follows:

*   **Get in** with CVE-2021-31207, a Microsoft Exchange Server security feature bypass vulnerability. The vulnerability allows a remote user to bypass the authentication process.
*   **Take control** with CVE-2021-34523, a Microsoft Exchange Server elevation of privilege (EoP) vulnerability. The vulnerability allows a user to raise their permissions.
*   **Do bad things** with CVE-2021-34473, a Microsoft Exchange Server remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability. The vulnerability allows an authenticated user to execute arbitrary code in the context of SYSTEM and write arbitrary files.

The vulnerabilities were found in Microsoft Exchange Server, which has a large userbase and which is usually set up as an Internet-facing instance. Plus, many publications have provided proof-of-concept (PoC) methodologies which anyone can copy and use.

Microsoft’s Security Update from May 2021 remediates all three ProxyShell vulnerabilities.

**4\. ProxyLogon**

After the ProxyShell entries we go straight to four vulnerabilities that are grouped under a similar name—ProxyLogon—for similar reasons. CVE-2021-26855, CVE-2021-26857, CVE-2021-2685, and CVE-2021-27065 all share the same description—”This vulnerability is part of an attack chain. The initial attack requires the ability to make an untrusted connection to Exchange server port 443.”

While the CVE description is the same for the 4 CVE’s we have learned that CVE-2021-26855 is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Exchange that was used to steal mailbox content. The RCE vulnerability CVE-2021-26857 was used to run code under the System account. The other two zero-day flaws—CVE-2021-26858 and CVE-2021-27065—would allow an attacker to write a file to any part of the server.

Together these four vulnerabilities form an attack chain that only requires the attacker to find the server running Exchange, and the account from which they want to extract email. After exploiting these vulnerabilities to gain initial access, threat actors deployed web shells on the compromised servers to gain persistence and make more changes. Web shells can allow attackers to steal data and perform additional malicious actions.

ProxyLogon started out as a limited and targeted attack method attributed to a group called Hafnium. Unfortunately it went from limited and targeted attacks to a full-size panic in no time. Attackers started using the Exchange bugs to access vulnerable servers before establishing web shells to gain persistence and steal information.

Microsoft has released a one-click mitigation tool for Exchange Server deployments. The Microsoft Exchange On-Premises Mitigation Tool will help customers who do not have dedicated security or IT teams to apply these security updates. **5\. CVE-2021-26084**

CVE-2021-26084 is an Object-Graph Navigation Language (OGNL) injection vulnerability that exists in some versions of Confluence Server and Data Center that can allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a Confluence Server or Data Center instance. This was a zero-day vulnerability that was only patched after it was found to be actively exploited in the wild. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by simply sending a specially crafted HTTP request containing a malicious parameter to a vulnerable install.

Shortly after the vulnerability was disclosed and a patch came out, researchers noticed massive scanning activity for vulnerable instances and crypto-miners started to use the vulnerability to run their code on unpatched servers.

On the Confluence Support website you can find a list of affected versions, instructions to upgrade, and a workaround for those that are unable to upgrade.

**Lessons learned**

What does this list tell us to look out for in 2022?

Well, first off, if you haven’t patched one of the above we would urgently advise you to do so. And it wouldn’t hurt to continue working down the list provided by CISA.

Second, you may have noticed a pattern in what made these vulnerabilities so popular to exploit:

*   **A large attack surface**. Popular and widely used software makes for a larger number of potential victims. The money is in the numbers.
*   **Internet-facing instances**. Remember, your Internet-connected software shares the Internet with every basement-dwelling criminal hacker in the world.
*   **Easy exploitability**. When vulnerabilities are easy to exploit, and PoCs are publicly available and easy to deploy, the number of potential threat actors goes up.

So, if you notice or hear about a vulnerability that meets these “requirements” move it to the top of your “to-patch” list.

However, the mad dash to set up shop in the cloud can sometimes lead to stormy weather: There are, after all, beaucoup security challenges hidden behind the cloud’s promise of blue skies. As Prevailion CTO Nate Warfield enumerates, cloud marketplaces “are rife with pre-built virtual machine (VM) images containing unpatched vulnerabilities, overly permissive firewall settings, and even malware and coin miners. Cloud providers don’t take a proactive stance towards breach and compromise monitoring and, in many cases, won’t even pass on notifications to their customers which they have received from external researchers.”

In order to put some quantifiable numbers around how organizations are faring in their journeys to the cloud, Threatpost polled 400+ readers. Topics included what security dangers respondents have encountered, and which ones they most fear they’ll run into. We also asked what security tools they plan to implement in the coming months.

When asked how confident respondents are that their organization had implemented sufficient cloud security, the majority felt bullish (68 percent). Worryingly, almost a quarter (24 percent) said they had no confidence in their organization’s cloud security. Just 8 percent said they feel “highly” confident.

**Responsibility**

Warfield’s list of challenges is just the tip of the iceberg, according to the poll results. There are also data-privacy and regulatory issues; the basic challenges of implementing cloud, such as staff shortages; the threat of cyberattack and data exposure; and plain old confusion.

Not everyone is sure who’s responsible for what when it comes to the sharedresponsibility model for public cloud deployments. And, a recurring question is what zero-access architecture for access management entails.

Just over half said they have embraced the shared-responsibility model for public cloud deployments (59 percent), but a quarter said they “don’t really understand it” and 12 percent said they did not. When asked if they’ve implemented a zero-trust architecture for access management, 53 percent said, “not yet but plan to,” and 17 percent said it confused them. Just 23 percent said yes. Six percent said absolutely not.

The notion of “DevSecOps,” where security is built into an organization’s cloudnative application lifecycle management, has more support: 71 percent noted that they’ve either adopted the strategy or soon plan to; but a fifth (21 percent) said they didn’t fully grasp what it means.

Meanwhile, organizations perceive there to be a lot of security pitfalls in the cloud. In its poll, Threatpost asked about a number of them, from API vulnerabilities to stolen cloud credentials, and container bugs to a smorgasbord of malware, including ransomware and cryptomining malware.

**Security Pitfall No. 1: Misconfigurations**

The biggest number of respondents – 27 percent – cited misconfigurations and data exposure as the biggest threat to their cloud deployments.

While many respondents reported that they’ve either experienced a cyberattack on their cloud assets in the past 12 months (18 percent) or that they aren’t exactly sure (2 percent), an even larger portion – 38 percent – reported having experienced a data-exposure incident due to misconfiguration.

Poll respondents’ takes on the issues confirm what’s been a constant over the past few years; namely, misconfigured cloud deployments have been, and continue to be, rampant. In a 2020 survey of 2,064 Google Cloud buckets by Comparitech, 6 percent of all Google Cloud buckets were estimated to be misconfigured and left open to the public internet, for anyone to access their highly sensitive content.

Respondents ranked their other most-worrying cloud security threats as account compromise and stolen cloud credentials, (20 percent); API vulnerabilities (13 percent); advanced attacks against cloud providers (11 percent); ransomware (9 percent); cyberespionage/data theft (6 percent); distributed denial of service (DDoS, 5 percent); other malware (3 percent); and cryptojacking (2 percent).

**How You’re Protecting the Cloud**

Fortunately, efforts to secure the cloud aren’t static. Nor are the technologies. When asked what security tools they’re planning on implementing in the next 12 months, poll respondents listed a host of technologies that will hopefully fill in whatever holes they have in their cybersecurity umbrellas.

For better or worse, multifactor authentication (MFA) on all accounts was cited as the top tool already in use by the most respondents, at 12 percent. It’s important however not to fall into a false sense of security: In January 2021, the feds warned that cloud attacks were bypassing weaker two-factor authentication, such as schemes that use a code sent to a mobile phone via SMS.

In terms of the top security tools that poll respondents plan to invest in, encryption for data at rest and data in transit (cited by 11 percent) took the lead, followed by identity access management (11 percent) and the adoption of self-managed security controls offered by cloud providers (9 percent).

The top most-cited planned upgrade to cloud security in the poll was user-behavior analytics: i.e., the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze large datasets and identify patterns that signify security breaches. This can be used to spot anomalous behavior that may indicate data exfiltration or other malicious activity that might otherwise slip by security tools and personnel. In all, 9 percent of respondents said their organizations have behavior analytics in the works in the coming year.

The next set of top cloud-security tools on the to-do list were cloudconfiguration monitoring tools (cited by 8 percent), a single console to manage security across multiple clouds (7.5 percent), and MFA on all accounts (7.5 percent). Next up were risk assessment and auditing (7.5 percent), policybased data loss prevention (DLP) (7 percent) and data activity monitoring (7 percent).

**What’s Gumming Up the Works**

Some security tools are in place, while more are being implemented. But all of this work to secure the cloud is, well, work, and it often requires more hands than are available. As noted earlier, respondents cited a lack of skilled staff as the biggest challenge when it comes to securing the cloud, (19 percent).

Indeed, the (ISC)²’s 2021 Cybersecurity Workforce Study found that there are 2.72 million open cybersecurity positions globally, and that the worldwide cybersecurity workforce needs to grow 65 percent to effectively defend organizations’ critical assets. Out of those, cloud management and cybersecurity ranked highest when it comes to the biggest talent gaps that companies need to fill.

The next biggest challenge facing organizations is a lack of visibility into what data is held within cloud applications, cited by 13 percent. That’s followed by insufficient identity and access management controls at 11 percent.

It’s clear that cloud security is increasingly top-of-mind at organizations, which have big plans for addressing it. But it’s a proverbial journey, not a sprint. As Prevailion’s Warfield noted, it’s crucial to take it seriously, and the time is now to start implementing controls.

“Cloud networking isn’t inherently insecure,” he said. “But as the world shifts to a cloud-centric and hybrid cloud environment, particularly for remote workforces, organizations need to recognize that their cloud-security strategy, policies, controls and processes must be as robust as in a classic onpremises environment.”

Security Turbulence in the Cloud: Survey Says…

To find the update, you’ll need to check your device settings. Devices that have received the Android April update so far include Google’s Pixel devices and some third-party Android phones, including the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, A51, A52 5G, A53 5G, A71, S10 series, S20 series, Note20 series, Z Flip 5G, Z Flip3, Z Fold, Z Fold2, and the Z Fold3, as well as the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro.

Google Chrome Emergency Updates

As the world’s biggest browser with over 3 billion users, it’s no surprise attackers are targeting Google Chrome. Browser-based attacks are particularly worrying because they can potentially be chained together with other vulnerabilities and used to take over your device.

It has been a particularly busy month for the team behind Google’s Chrome browser, which has seen several security updates within weeks of each other. The latest, pushed out in mid-April, fixes two issues including a high-severity zero-day vulnerability, CVE-2022-1364, which is already being used by attackers.

The technical details aren’t currently available, but the timing of the fix—just a day after it was reported—indicates it’s pretty serious. If you use Chrome, your browser should now be on version 100.0.4896.127 to include the fix. You’ll need to restart Chrome after the update has installed to ensure it activates.

The Chrome issue also impacts other Chromium-based browsers, including Brave, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi, so if you use one of those, make sure you apply the patch.

But that’s not all. On April 27, Google announced another Chrome update, fixing 30 security vulnerabilities. None of these have been exploited yet, the company says, but seven are rated as being a high risk. The update takes the browser to version 101.0.4951.41.

Oracle’s April 2022 Critical Patch Update

In mid-April, Oracle released its quarterly Critical Patch Update, including a whopping 520 security fixes. Some of the issues fixed in the update are serious—300 of them can be exploited remotely without authentication, and 75 security issues are rated as critical severity. Some of the Oracle patches address CVE-2022-22965, aka Spring4Shell, a remote code execution (RCE) flaw in the spring framework.

Microsoft’s Busy April Patch Tuesday

Microsoft had a major Patch Tuesday in April, issuing fixes for over 100 vulnerabilities, including 10 critical RCE flaws. One of the most important, CVE-2022-24521, is already being exploited by attackers, according to the company.

Reported by the NSA and researchers at CrowdStrike, the issue in the Windows Common Log File system driver doesn’t require human interaction to be exploited and can be used to obtain administrative privileges on a logged-in system. Other notable fixes include CVE-2022-26904—a publicly known issue—and CVE-2022-26815, a severe DNS Server flaw.

Mozilla Thunderbird 91.8.0 Fix

On April 5, Mozilla released a patch to fix security issues in its Thunderbird email client as well as its Firefox browser. The details are scant, but Thunderbird 91.8 fixes four vulnerabilities rated as having a high impact, some of which could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

Firefox ESR 91.8 and Firefox 99 also fix multiple security issues.

WordPress Plugin Elementor Version 3.6.3 

The Elementor website builder plug-in for WordPress has received a big security fix in April for a critical-rated vulnerability that could allow attackers to perform remote code execution and effectively take over a website.

Found by researchers at Plugin Vulnerabilities, the flaw was introduced in the plug-in in version 3.6.0, released on March 22. “We would recommend not using this plugin until it has had a thorough security review and all issues are addressed,” the researchers said.

Although the attacker must be authenticated to exploit the issue, it’s still pretty serious because anyone logged into an affected website can exploit it. The update for Elementor’s 5 million users, version 3.6.3, should be applied as soon as possible.

Google has been busy. After introducing badges for browser apps, it's also launched its "nutrition labels" for apps.

Google has launched its new “nutrition labels” for apps, a feature it promised in the spring of 2021. This release came days after the Chrome team released badges for the Chrome Web Store for browser extensions.

The company said in a blog post that it’s rolling out the labels—which it calls the Google Play Data safety section—gradually to users.

The labels are released weeks ahead of the July 20 deadline, the date when developers are required to adequately disclose what their apps do. This includes what data they collect, how it is shared with third parties (if ever), and how they secure user data. “We heard from users and app developers that displaying the data an app collects, without additional context, is not enough,” Google said.

Indeed, the search giant followed Apple’s lead when it introduced app privacy labels in its App Store in December 2020.

The Data safety section’s design relied heavily on feedback from Android users, who also want to know for what purpose their data is collected and whether app developers are sharing it. Google added information on whether an app needs data to function or if data collection is optional. Below is a list of other information that developers can show in the Data safety section of their apps:

> – Whether a qualifying app has committed to following Google Play’s Families Policy to better protect children in the Play store.  
> – Whether the developer has validated their security practices against a global security standard (more specifically, the MASVS).

While this new feature is in place so Android users can make informed choices when it comes to trusting an app with their data, it’s still up to developers to disclose what their apps are capable of. Google said that if it finds a developer misstating their app’s features, the company will ask them to fix it instead of removing the app straight away. Action is only taken if the app remains uncompliant.

We will see if Google does a better job implementing its labels than Apple. If you recall, many labels in the App Store were found to be unreliable as they provided false information.

Google Play’s Data safety section empowers Android users to make informed app choices

The sophisticated Bumblebee downloader is being used in ongoing email-borne attacks that could lead to ransomware infections.

At least three separate waves of cyberattacks are underway that feature a sophisticated new malware loader dubbed Bumblebee that fetches shell code and second-stage tools, such as Cobalt Strike, Sliver, and Meterpreter – possibly in a run-up to ransomware attacks.

As an initial-access tool – backdoor malware that infects a target before loading follow-on binaries – Bumblebee specializes in stealth, according to research from Proofpoint.

"Bumblebee is in active development and wields elaborate evasion techniques to include complex anti-virtualization," researchers explain in a report issued on Thursday. "Unlike most other malware that uses process hollowing or DLL injection, this loader utilizes an asynchronous procedure call (APC) injection to start the shellcode from the commands received from the command and control (C2)."

Further, Bumblebee appears to be a significantly upgraded replacement for the well-known BazaLoader tool that often presages ransomware attacks. 

"Threat actors using Bumblebee are associated with malware payloads that have been linked to follow-on ransomware campaigns," researchers note in the report. And "campaigns identified by Proofpoint overlap with activity detailed \[by Google\] as leading to Conti and Diavol ransomware."

**BazaLoader Replacement  
**Bumblebee first buzzed onto the scene in March, shortly after BazaLoader disappeared from Proofpoint’s telemetry, researchers said.

BazaLoader was up until then a common malware first seen in 2020, sharing the cybercrime spotlight with other favored initial-access baddies, such as Emotet, Trickbot, and IcedID. Notably, it was employed in several high-volume campaigns that led to Conti ransomware infections.

"BazaLoader's apparent disappearance from the cybercrime threat landscape coincides with the timing of Conti Leaks, when, at the end of February, a Ukrainian researcher with access to Conti's internal operations began leaking data from the cybercriminal organization. Infrastructure associated with BazaLoader was identified in the leaked files," researchers explain in the report.

Now Bumblebee is cropping up in campaigns run by the same crimeware groups previously observed delivering BazaLoader, the report notes. Proofpoint added that the groups are likely initial-access brokers (IABs), which dovetails with the previously mentioned Google TAG research. IABs infiltrate targets and sell specialized access to backdoored corporate networks on the Dark Web, and they often partner with ransomware operators as part of a thriving underground economy. They excel at finding unpatched machines, password-cracking and brute-forcing, social engineering and phishing, and other common avenues for infection.

"Several threat actors that typically use BazaLoader in malware campaigns have transitioned to Bumblebee," Proofpoint researchers say. "Proofpoint assesses with moderate confidence the actors using Bumblebee may be considered initial-access facilitators."

**Hive of Activity: Ongoing Cybercrime Campaigns**  
Starting in March, Proofpoint observed Bumblebee campaigns distributed via email campaigns by at least three tracked threat actors.

“While lures, delivery techniques, and file names are typically customized to the different threat actors distributing the campaigns, Proofpoint observed several commonalities across campaigns, such as the use of ISO files containing shortcut files and DLLs and a common DLL entry point used by multiple actors within the same week,” according to the report. ISO files are used to store images of optical disks, DVDs, CDs, and other media.

In one case, a DocuSign-branded email campaign was designed to trick targets into downloading a malicious, zipped ISO file purporting to be an unpaid invoice, hosted on OneDrive. The emails contained either a hyperlink asking recipients to “REVIEW THE DOCUMENT" in the body of the message, or they used HTML attachments.

“The embedded URL in the HTML attachment used a redirect service which Proofpoint refers to as Cookie Reloaded, a URL redirect service which uses Prometheus TDS to filter downloads based on the time zone and cookies of the potential victim,” explain the researchers. “The redirector in turn directed the user to a zipped ISO file, also hosted on OneDrive.”

The ISO file contained a shortcut file named "ATTACHME.LNK," which, when clicked, executed "Attachments.dat" with the correct parameters to run the Bumblebee downloader.

In another case, a campaign used thread jacking (i.e., when cybercriminals reply to existing email exchanges, inserting themselves into legitimate conversations) to deliver emails with malicious zipped ISO attachments.

And in yet another case, emails were generated by submitting a message to a contact form on the target's website, while leaving public comments regarding the topic on the target's site. As a lure, the attackers made claims about stolen images on the website. These "complaints" contained a link to a landing page that directed the user to the download of a malicious ISO file.

"The use of Bumblebee by multiple threat actors, the timing of its introduction in the landscape, and behaviors described in this report can be considered a notable shift in the cybercriminal threat landscape," researchers conclude. "Proofpoint assesses with high confidence based on malware artifacts all the tracked threat actors using Bumblebee are receiving it from the same source."  

To protect themselves, organizations should shore up basic security hygiene, such as timely patching and strong password/multifactor authentication use – and also work with employees to instill awareness of email-borne threats and common social-engineering trickery.

**Malware Analysis: This Is No Bumbler  
**Bumblebee is new and still under active development, but it’s already a sophisticated threat that organizations should watch out for, Proofpoint warned.

Once installed, the loader gathers system information and generates a "client ID." It then hooks up with the C2 (the address(es) are stored in plaintext) and checks in at randomized intervals of seconds to retrieve commands.

Bumblebee supports the following commands:  

*   Shi: shellcode injection
*   Dij: DLL injection
*   Dex: Download executable
*   Sdl: uninstall loader
*   Ins: enable persistence on the bot

Notably, it contains powerful anti-analysis and evasion tactics, including sandbox and virtual-machine awareness, the addition of an encryption layer to the network communications, and a check on current running processes against a hardcoded list of common tools used by malware analysts.

"The introduction of the Bumblebee loader to the crimeware threat landscape and its apparent replacement for BazaLoader demonstrates the flexibility threat actors have to quickly shift \[tactics, techniques, and procedures\] and adopt new malware," says Sherrod DeGrippo, vice president of threat research and detection at Proofpoint. "Additionally, the malware is quite sophisticated and demonstrates being in ongoing, active development, introducing new methods of evading detection."

Some major tech companies have unwittingly opened harassment and exploitation opportunities to the women and children who they have pledged to protect. This happened because they provided information in response to emergency data requests from legitimate law enforcement accounts that hackers had compromised. This finding came from four federal law enforcement agencies and a couple of industry investigators.

Although the data provided was limited, it was enough for the hackers to work on and use to target and harass specific women or sexually extort minors. In some instances, the data was used to pressure victims to create and share more sexually explicit material or—in one sinister case—carve the perpetrator’s name into their skin and share photos of it.

Typically, no company is under any legal obligation to respond to emergency data requests as these don’t include court orders. However, it is accepted practice that tech companies comply with such requests as a sign of “good faith.”

Former Facebook Chief Security Officer (CSO) turned consultant Alex Stamos said in an interview with Bloomberg:

> “I know that emergency data requests get used in real life-threatening emergencies every day. It is tragic that this mechanism is being abused to sexually exploit children.”

When victims refuse, they are subjected to swatting, doxxing, and other harassment techniques.

People close to the issue revealed that Apple, Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Discord, Meta (Facebook’s parent company), and Twitter were the companies who complied with the bogus requests. The data that was handed over varies per company but generally includes the name, IP address, email address, and physical address.

Law enforcement and investigators consider the tactic of exploiting legitimate channels as “the newest criminal tool” to acquire data from tech companies. This is unsettling in several ways. First, attackers can successfully impersonate police officers by compromising their agency’s email systems. Second, there is no way for tech companies to identify if such requests are fraudulent or not. Third, victims can’t protect themselves from such attacks unless they completely delete their accounts.

This tactic has become prevalent in recent months.

According to Stamos:

> “Police departments are going to have to focus on preventing account compromises with multi-factor authentication and better analysis of user behavior, and tech companies should implement a confirmation callback policy as well as push law enforcement to use their dedicated portals where they can better detect account takeovers.”

Many believe that the perpetrators of these attacks are teenagers based in the US and also abroad. This is potentially based on their methods of retaliation against victims who resist them.

Unit 221b’s Chief Research Officer Allison Nixon told Bloomberg that law enforcement and the cybersecurity industry must prioritize threats led by underage perpetrators.

“We are now witnessing their transition to organized crime, and all the real world violence and sexual abuse that comes with it,” Nixon said. They are causing serious harm, so “we need to start treating them like adults,” she said—a sentiment echoed by many in the cybersecurity industry.

We’ve also seen a considerable amount of scams preying on those who want to bring help to the helpless. During these times of struggle, donation and phishing scams abound, too.

**There’s a spam campaign encouraging you to donate to or support Ukraine**

Our email honeypot snagged dozens of samples belonging to a campaign that spoofed an email that receivers were meant to believe came from the United Nations or United Humanitarian.

Our Threat Intelligence Team took a closer look and found that the actual senders are work email addresses of individuals linked to legitimate services in Bangladesh. The emails appeared to be compromised.

We inspected the URL using a domain registrant and found it was created on April 19 2022, two days before we started receiving the spam emails.

**Be extra vigilant with “mirrored” sites**

The scam page looks slick, professional, and not what you may expect from a bogus donation portal. There’s a good reason for this. The entire site has been copied from _unrefugees.org_ using HTTrack, a free website copier.

_Unrefugees.org_ is the USA for UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). It is a Washington-based, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide food, shelter, and medical care to those fleeing their homes due to conflict, persecution, or violence.

While the fake site mirrors the legitimate site perfectly, it has one major exception: They switched out the genuine donation page for one of their own. The real site allows you to donate monthly via credit card, Google Pay, or PayPal. Donations made to the fake site, however, are made through Bitcoin.

We checked multiple sources for information on the Bitcoin address provided. It doesn’t appear in scam databases or fraud reports and has neither sent nor received funds. This, combined with the site now failing to resolve, hopefully means the scammers got nowhere with their phishing attempt.

**How to tell if a donation site is what it says it is**

It’s very difficult to know at a glance which sites are real. This is especially true where donations are concerned. However, there are tools available to check.

You can check for registered charities online in most cases, and the genuine site is listed here against the BBB (Better Business Bureau) record. You can find similar types of checks in other countries.

There are very good reasons for making speedy donations. Even so, taking the time to ensure the site you’re donating to is the real deal is the best course of action for both you and the people you’ll be helping.
