New Grandoreiro Banking Malware Variants Emerge with Advanced Tactics to Evade Detection

New variants of a banking malware called Grandoreiro have been found to adopt new tactics in an effort to bypass anti-fraud measures, indicating that the malicious software is continuing to be actively developed despite law enforcement efforts to crack down on the operation. "Only part of this gang was arrested: the remaining operators behind Grandoreiro continue attacking users all over the

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-7077-1

Ubuntu Security Notice 7077-1 - Enrique Nissim and Krzysztof Okupski discovered that some AMD processors did not properly restrict access to the System Management Mode configuration when the SMM Lock was enabled. A privileged local attacker could possibly use this issue to further escalate their privileges and execute arbitrary code within the processor's firmware layer.

The Lingering 'Beige Desktop' Paradox

Organizations are grappling with the risks of having outdated hardware handling core workloads, mission-critical applications no one knows how to update or maintain, and systems that IT and security teams don't know about.

GHSA-mh98-763h-m9v4: JUJU_CONTEXT_ID is a predictable authentication secret

`JUJU_CONTEXT_ID` is the authentication measure on the unit hook tool abstract domain socket. It looks like `JUJU_CONTEXT_ID=appname/0-update-status-6073989428498739633`. This value looks fairly unpredictable, but due to the random source used, it is highly predictable. `JUJU_CONTEXT_ID` has the following components: - the application name - the unit number - the hook being currently run - a uint63 decimal number On a system the application name and unit number can be deduced by reading the structure of the filesystem. The current hook being run is not easily deduce-able, but is a limited set of possible values, so one could try them all. Finally the random number, this is generated from a non cryptographically secure random source. Specifically the random number generator built into the go standard library, using the current unix time in seconds (at startup) as the seed. There is no rate limiting on the abstract domain socket, the only limiting factor is time (window of time the h...

Red Hat Security Advisory 2024-7418-03 - An update for linux-firmware is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 Advanced Mission Critical Update Support, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 Update Services for SAP Solutions, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 Telecommunications Update Service.

Security Concerns Plague Emerging Chip Architecture

The RISC-V chip architecture is gaining popularity worldwide, but the fact that it is easy to modify the processor design means it is also easy to introduce hard-to-patch vulnerabilities in the chips.

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-7019-1

Ubuntu Security Notice 7019-1 - Ziming Zhang discovered that the DRM driver for VMware Virtual GPU did not properly handle certain error conditions, leading to a NULL pointer dereference. A local attacker could possibly trigger this vulnerability to cause a denial of service. Gui-Dong Han discovered that the software RAID driver in the Linux kernel contained a race condition, leading to an integer overflow vulnerability. A privileged attacker could possibly use this to cause a denial of service.

GHSA-64vr-g452-qvp3: Vite DOM Clobbering gadget found in vite bundled scripts that leads to XSS

### Summary We discovered a DOM Clobbering vulnerability in Vite when building scripts to `cjs`/`iife`/`umd` output format. The DOM Clobbering gadget in the module can lead to cross-site scripting (XSS) in web pages where scriptless attacker-controlled HTML elements (e.g., an img tag with an unsanitized name attribute) are present. Note that, we have identified similar security issues in Webpack: https://github.com/webpack/webpack/security/advisories/GHSA-4vvj-4cpr-p986 ### Details **Backgrounds** DOM Clobbering is a type of code-reuse attack where the attacker first embeds a piece of non-script, seemingly benign HTML markups in the webpage (e.g. through a post or comment) and leverages the gadgets (pieces of js code) living in the existing javascript code to transform it into executable code.
