UnitedHealth has made an announcement about the stolen data in the ransomware attack on subsidiary Change Healthcare.

UnitedHealth Group has given an update on the February cyberattack on Change Healthcare, one of its subsidiaries. In the update, the company revealed the scale of the breach, saying:

> “Based on initial targeted data sampling to date, the company has found files containing protected health information (PHI) or personally identifiable information (PII), which could cover a substantial proportion of people in America.”

UnitedHealth also announced support for affected people.

On Wednesday February 21, 2024, Change Healthcare experienced serious system outages due to the cyberattack. The incident led to widespread billing outages, as well as disruptions at pharmacies across the United States.

The attack on Change Healthcare, which processes about 50% of US medical claims, was one of the worst ransomware attacks against American healthcare and caused widespread disruption in payments to doctors and health facilities.

Despite the ongoing investigation, which expectedly will take several more months of detailed analysis, UnitedHealth said it had decided to immediately provide support. The company says it continues to monitor the regular web and the dark web for any published data.

The chief executive of UnitedHealth Group, Andrew Witty, is expected to testify in Congress in May about the matter. Meanwhile the company says it has made strong progress restoring services impacted by the event and is prioritizing the restoration of services that impact patient access to care or medication.

**Protecting yourself from a data breach**

There are some actions you can take if you are, or suspect you may have been, the victim of a data breach.

*   **Check the vendor’s advice.** Every breach is different, so check with the vendor to find out what’s happened, and follow any specific advice they offer.
*   **Change your password.** You can make a stolen password useless to thieves by changing it. Choose a strong password that you don’t use for anything else. Better yet, let a password manager choose one for you.
*   **Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).** If you can, use a FIDO2-compliant hardware key, laptop or phone as your second factor. Some forms of two-factor authentication (2FA) can be phished just as easily as a password. 2FA that relies on a FIDO2 device can’t be phished.
*   **Watch out for fake vendors.** The thieves may contact you posing as the vendor. Check the vendor website to see if they are contacting victims, and verify any contacts using a different communication channel.
*   **Take your time.** Phishing attacks often impersonate people or brands you know, and use themes that require urgent attention, such as missed deliveries, account suspensions, and security alerts.
*   **Set up identity monitoring.** Identity monitoring alerts you if your personal information is found being traded illegally online, and helps you recover after.

COMMENTARY

OWASP recently released its top 10 list for large language model (LLM) applications, in an effort to educate the industry on potential security threats to be aware of when deploying and managing LLMs. This release is a notable step in the right direction for the security community, as developers, designers, architects, and managers now have 10 areas to clearly focus on. 

Similar to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) framework and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) guidelines provided for the security industry, OWSAP's list creates an opportunity for better alignment within organizations. With this knowledge, chief information security officers (CISOs) and security leaders can ensure the best security precautions are in place around the use of LLM technologies that are quickly evolving. LLMs are just code. We need to apply what we have learned about authenticating and authorizing code to prevent misuse and compromise. This is why identity provides the kill switch for AI, which is the ability to authenticate and authorize each model and their actions, and stop it when misuse, compromise, or errors occur.

**Adversaries Are Capitalizing on Gaps in Organizations**

As security practitioners, we've long talked about what adversaries are doing, such as data poisoning, supply chain vulnerabilities, excessive agency and theft, and more. This OWASP list for LLMs is proof that the industry is recognizing where risks are. To protect our organizations, we have to course correct quickly and be proactive. 

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is putting a spotlight on a new wave of software risks that are rooted in the same capabilities that made it powerful in the first place. Every time a user asks an LLM a question, it crawls countless Web locations in an attempt to provide an AI-generated response or output. While every new technology comes with new risks, LLMs are especially concerning because they're so different from the tools we're used to.

Almost all of the top 10 LLM threats center around a compromise of authentication for the identities used in the models. The different attack methods run the gamut, affecting not only the identities of model inputs but also the identities of the models themselves, as well as their outputs and actions. This has a knock-on effect and calls for authentication in the code-signing and creating processes to halt the vulnerability at the source.

**Authenticating Training and Models to Prevent Poisoning and Misuse**

With more machines talking to each other than ever before, there must be training and authentication of the way that identities will be used to send information and data from one machine to another. The model needs to authenticate the code so that the model can mirror that authentication to other machines. If there's an issue with the initial input or model — because models are vulnerable and something to keep a close eye on — there will be a domino effect. Models, and their inputs, must be authenticated. If they aren't, security team members will be questioning if this is the right model they trained or if it's using the plug-ins they approved. When models can use APIs and other models' authentication, authorization must be well defined and managed. Each model must be authenticated with a unique identity.

We saw this play out recently with AT&T's breakdown, which was dubbed a "software configuration error," leaving thousands of people without cellphone service during their morning commute. The same week, Google experienced a bug that was very different but equally concerning. Google's Gemini image generator misrepresented historical images, causing diversity and bias concerns due to AI. In both cases, the data used to train GenAI models and LLMs — as well as the lack of guardrails around it — was the root of the problem. To prevent issues like this in the future, AI firms need to spend more time and money to adequately train the models and inform the data better. 

In order to design a bulletproof and secure system, CISOs and security leaders should design a system where the model works with other models. This way, an adversary stealing one model does not collapse the entire system, and allows for a kill-switch approach. You can shut off a model and keep working and protecting the company's intellectual property. This positions security teams in a much stronger way and prevents any further damages. 

**Acting on Lessons From the List **

For security leaders, I recommend taking OWASP's guidance and asking your CISO or C-level execs how the organization is scoring on these vulnerabilities overall. This framework holds us all more accountable for delivering market-level security insights and solutions. It is encouraging that we have something to show our CEO and board to illustrate how we're doing when it comes to risk preparedness. 

As we continue to see risks arise with LLMs and AI customer service tools, like we just did with Air Canada's chatbot giving a reimbursement to a traveler, companies will be held accountable for mistakes. It's time to start regulating LLMs to ensure they're accurately trained and ready to handle business deals that could affect the bottom line. 

In conclusion, this list serves as a great framework for rising Web vulnerabilities and the risks we need to pay attention to when using LLMs. While more than half of the top 10 risks are ones that are essentially mitigated and calling for the kill switch for AI, companies will need to evaluate their options when deploying new LLMs. If the right tools are in place to authenticate the inputs and models, as well as the models' actions, companies will be better equipped to leverage the AI kill-switch idea and prevent further destruction. While this may seem daunting, there are ways to protect your organization amid the infiltration of AI and LLMs in your network.

Lessons for CISOs From OWASP's LLM Top 10

McAfee cybersecurity researchers have discovered a malicious scheme exploiting GitHub’s comment section, where threat actors host malware and disguise download links as legitimate Microsoft repositories. 

This incident reminds me of a similar event that occurred in June 2027, during which Russian hackers exploited the comment section of Britney Spears’ Instagram profile to host malware.

According to McAfee, cybercriminals have been exploiting GitHub’s file upload logic since February 2024 to host and distribute malware through automatically generated download links containing the repository owner’s name and ownership details.

These repositories contain password-stealing malware disguised as seemingly innocuous files.  More troubling, the repositories also included comments with download links crafted to mimic official Microsoft software repository URLs.

GitHub’s comment feature stores files on its servers, creating real-time access links to them. This can trick potential victims into thinking they are clicking on a link from a trusted developer.  Users don’t need to send comments or bug reports as the file is already uploaded and available. 

****What to do About it?****

GitHub’s CDN files remain unchanged even after comments are posted or deleted, and downloaded URLs keep functioning. This issue allows threat actors to create sophisticated lures, as most software companies use GitHub and the file URL contains the repository name. 

Unfortunately, the only available solution is to disable comments, but this leads to more issues as legitimate users often report bugs or provide quality suggestions, and comments can only be disabled for up to six months at a time.

****Why This Matters:****

This deceptive tactic leverages the trusted nature of both GitHub and Microsoft. Users visiting these repositories might be tricked into downloading malware, believing they are getting legitimate Microsoft software.

This could have serious consequences, as downloaded malware could steal user credentials, compromise systems, steal browsing data and crypto funds or launch further attacks.

However, the good news is that according to Bleeping Computer, GitHub has removed the malware associated with Microsoft’s repositories.

****How to Protect Yourself?****

To protect yourself, download software directly from the developer’s official website, avoid clicking on links in comments or third-party websites, verify file hashes, and use a robust security solution with real-time malware scanning. If unsure about a download link, visit the official Microsoft website to ensure system safety.

GitHub Comments Abused to Spread Malware in Fake Microsoft Repositories

*   Cisco Talos discovered a new ongoing campaign since at least February 2024, operated by a threat actor distributing three famous infostealer malware, including Cryptbot, LummaC2 and Rhadamanthys.
*   Talos also discovered a new PowerShell command-line argument embedded in the LNK file to bypass anti-virus products and download the final payload into the victims’ host.
*   This campaign uses the Content Delivery Network (CDN) cache domain as a download server, hosting the malicious HTA file and payload. 
*   Talos assesses with moderate confidence that the threat actor CoralRaider operates the campaign. We observed several overlaps in tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) of CoralRaider’s Rotbot campaign, including the initial attack vector of the Windows Shortcut file, intermediate PowerShell decryptor and payload download scripts, the FoDHelper technique used to bypass User Access Controls (UAC) of the victim machine.  

**Victimology and actor infrastructure**

The campaign affects victims across multiple countries, including the U.S., Nigeria, Pakistan, Ecuador, Germany, Egypt, the U.K., Poland, the Philippines, Norway, Japan, Syria and Turkey, based on our telemetry data and OSINT information. Our telemetry also disclosed that some affected users were from Japan’s computer service call center organizations and civil defense service organizations in Syria. The affected users were downloading files masquerading as movie files through the browser, indicating the possibility of a widespread attack on users across various business verticals and geographies.

We observe that this threat actor is using a Content Delivery Network (CDN) cache to store the malicious files on their network edge host in this campaign, avoiding request delay. The actor is using the CDN cache as a download server to deceive network defenders.

Talos discovered that the actor is using multiple C2 domains in the campaign. The DNS requests for the domains during our analysis period are shown in the graph, indicating the campaign is ongoing. 

**Tactics, techniques and procedures overlap with other campaigns **

Talos assesses with moderate confidence that threat actor CoralRaider is likely operating this campaign based on several overlaps in the TTPs used and the targeted victims’ geography of this campaign with that of the CoralRaider’s Rotbot campaign. We spotted that the PowerShell scripts used in the attack chain of this campaign to decrypt the PowerShell scripts of further stages and the downloader PowerShell script are similar to those employed in the Rotbot’s campaign.

The Powershell script did not appear in any public repository or article, indicating the threat actor likely developed these PowerShell scripts. Pivoting on the PowerShell argument embedded in the LNK file showed us that such arguments are not popular and likely specific to the actor and the campaign.

**Multi-stage infection chain to deliver the payload **

The infection chain starts when a victim opens the malicious shortcut file from a ZIP file downloaded using the drive-by download technique, according to our telemetry. The threat actor is likely delivering malicious links to victims through phishing emails.

The Windows shortcut file has an embedded PowerShell command running a malicious HTA file on attacker-controlled CDN domains. HTA file executes an embedded Javascript, which decodes and runs a PowerShell decrypter script. PowerShell decrypter script decrypts the embedded PowerShell Loader script and runs it in the victim’s memory. The PowerShell Loader executes multiple functions to evade the detections and bypass UAC, and finally, it downloads and runs one of the payloads, Cryptbot, LummaC2 or Rhadamanthys information stealer.

**Windows Shortcut file to execute the malicious HTA file**

Windows shortcut file runs a PowerShell command to download and run an HTML application file on the victim’s machine. The threat actor has used “gp,” a PowerShell command alias for Get-ItemProperty, to read the registry contents of the application classes registry key and gets the executable name “mshta.exe.” Using mshta.exe, the PowerShell instance executes the remotely hosted malicious HTA file on the victim’s machine. 

**Obfuscated HTA runs embedded PowerShell decrypter  **

The malicious HTML application file is heavily obfuscated and has a Javascript that decodes and executes a function using the String fromCharCode method. The decoded function then executes an embedded PowerShell decryptor script. 

The decryptor PowerShell script has a block of AES-encrypted string. Using the AES decryptor function, it generates an AES key of 256 bytes from a base64 encoded string “RVRVd2h4RUJHUWNiTEZpbkN5SXhzUWRHeFN4V053THQ=” and the IV “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.” With the key and IV, it decrypts and executes the next stage of the PowerShell Loader script. 

**PowerShell loader downloads and runs the payload**

The PowerShell loader script is modular and has multiple functions to perform a sequence of activities on the victim’s machine. Initially, it executes a function that drops a batch script in the victim machine’s temporary folder and writes its contents, which includes the PowerShell command to add the folder “ProgramData” of the victim machine to the Windows Defender exclusion list. 

The dropped bath script is executed through a living-off-the-land binary (LoLBin) “FoDHelper.exe” and a Programmatic Identifiers (ProgIDs) registry key to bypass the User Access Controls (UAC) in the victim’s machine. Fodhelper is a Windows feature, an on-demand helper binary that runs by default with high integrity. Usually, when the FodHelper is run, it checks for the presence of the registry keys listed below. If the registry keys have commands assigned, the FodHelper will execute them in an elevated context without prompting the user.

Windows Defender, by default, detects if there are attempts to write to the registry keysHKCU:\Software\Classes\ms-settings\shell\open\command and to evade this detection, the threat actor uses the programmatic identifier (ProgID). In Windows machines, a programmatic identifier (ProgID ) is a registry entry that can be associated with a Class ID (CLSID ), which is a globally unique serial number that identifies a COM (Component Object Model) class object. The Windows Shell uses a default ProgID registry key called CurVer, which is used to set the default version of a COM application. 

In this campaign, the threat actor abuses the “CurVer” registry key feature by creating a custom ProgID “ServiceHostXGRT” registry key in the software classes registry and assigns the Windows shell to execute a command to run the batch script.

The script configures the ProgID ServiceHostXGRT in the CurVer registry subkey of HKCU\Software\Classes\ms-settings\CurVer, which will get translated to HKCU:\Software\Classes\ms-settings\shell\open\command. After modifying the registry settings, the PowerShell script runs FoDHelper.exe, executing the command assigned to the registry key HKCU:\Software\Classes\ms-settings\shell\open\command and executing the dropped batch script. Finally, it deletes the configured registry keys to evade detection. 

The batch script adds the folder “C:\\ProgramData” to the Windows Defender exclusion list. The PowerShell loader script downloads the payload and saves it in the “C:\\ProgramData” folder as “X1xDd.exe.”

After downloading the payload to the victim’s machine, the PowerShell loader executes another function that overwrites the previously dropped batch file with the new instructions to run the downloaded payload information stealer through the Windows start command. It again uses the same FoDHelper technique to run the batch script’s second version, which we explained earlier in this section.  

**Actor’s choice of three payloads in the same campaign **

Talos discovered that the threat actor delivered three famous information stealer malware as payloads in this campaign, including CryptBot, LummaC2 and Rhadamanthys. These information stealers target victims’ information, such as system and browser data, credentials, cryptocurrency wallets and financial information. 

**CryptBot**

CryptBot is a typical infostealer targeting Windows systems discovered in the wild in 2019 by GDATA. It is designed to steal sensitive information from infected computers, such as credentials from browsers, cryptocurrency wallets, browser cookies and credit cards, and creates screenshots of the infected system. 

Talos has discovered a new CryptBot variant distributed in the wild since January 2024. The goal of the new CryptBot is the same, with some new innovative functionalities. The new CryptBot is packed with different techniques to obstruct malware analysis. A few new CryptBot variants are packed with VMProtect V2.0.3-2.13; others also have VMProtect, but with unknown versions. The new CryptBot attempts to steal sensitive information from infected machines and modifies the configuration changes of the stolen applications. The list of targeted browsers, applications and cryptocurrency wallets by the new variant of CryptBot is shown below.

We observed the new CryptBot variant also includes password manager application databases and authenticator application information in its stealing list to steal the cryptocurrency wallets that have two-factor authentication enabled. 

CryptBot is aware that the target applications in the victim’s environment will have different versions, and their database files will have different file extensions. It scans the victim’s machine for database files’ extensions of the targeted applications for harvesting credentials. 

**LummaC2 **

Talos discovered that the actor is delivering a new variant of LummaC2 malware as an alternative payload in this campaign. LummaC2 is a notorious information stealer that attempts to harvest information from victims’ machines. Based on the report posted by outpost24 and other external security reports, LummaC2 has already been confirmed to be sold on the underground market for years. 

The threat actor has modified LummaC2’s information stealer capability and obfuscated the malware with a custom algorithm. The obfuscation algorithm is saved in another section inside the malware shown below.

The new version of LummaC2 also presents the same signature of the alert message displayed to the user during its execution. 

The C2 domains are encrypted with a symmetric algorithm, and we found that the actor has nine C2 servers that the malware will attempt to connect to one by one. Analyzing various samples of the new LummaC2 variant, we spotted that each will use a different key to encrypt the C2.

LummaC2’s first step in its exfiltration phase is its connection to the C2 server. The malware will exit the process if it does not receive the “OK” message as a response from any of the nine C2 servers. The second step will be exfiltrating information from infected machines. The basic stealing functionality is the same as the previous version, with the addition of victims’ discord credentials to exfiltrate. 

**Rhadamanthys**

The last payload we found in this campaign is Rhadamanthys malware, a famous infostealer appearing in the underground forum advertisement in September 2022. The Rhadamanthys malware has been evolving till now, and its authors have released a new version, V0.6.0, on Feb. 15, 2024. However, the Rhadamanthys variant we found in this campaign is still v0.5.0.

The threat actor uses a Python executable file as a loader to execute the Rhadamanthys malware into memory. After decompiling the Python executable file, Python scripts load the Rhadamanthys malware in two stages. The first stage is a simple Python script that replaces the binary code from 0 to 9 and decodes the second stage. 

In the second stage, the Python script uses the Windows API to allocate a memory block and inject Rhadamanthys malware into the process. We spotted that the threat actor is developing the Python script with the intention of including the functionality of executing a shellcode. 

Analyzing the final executable file showed us that the malware unpacks the loader module with the custom format having the magic header “XS” and performs the process injection. The custom loader module in XS format is similar to that of a Rhadamanthys sample analyzed by the researcher at Check Point. The malware selects one of the listed processes as the target process for process injection from a hardcoded list in the binary:

In a major privacy breach, private data including private messages of millions of Discord users are being sold on a clear web website. The website, Spy.pet, is an internet-scraping company, that has been collecting data from Discord since November 2023.

So far, as seen by Hackread.com, it has sold four billion public Discord messages which were publicly accessible and gathered from 14,201 servers, which are home to 627,914,396 users.

While it is unclear who owns the website, the very nature of the data – scraped messages – suggests a potential security flaw in how Discord interacts with bots or third-party applications.

****What Does “Scraped Messages” Mean?****

Scraping is a method where automated tools extract information from a platform, such as Discord, by exploiting weaknesses in bots or unofficial apps’ access and interaction with the targeted platform.

This can expose private chats, server chats, and direct messages, potentially exposing conversations between users or groups. Previously, scrapped databases from Chess.com, Clubhouse, LinkedIn, Mastodon, and GETTR also surfaced online.

****What Information is at Risk?****

Security experts suspect that the leaked data from Discord chats could expose personal information, private photos and videos, financial details, and company secrets. Users’ usernames, nicknames, and real names could be included, and sensitive media could be shared.

Additionally, financial details could be a target for scammers, and company secrets, especially if Discord is used for business communication, could also be exposed.

****How does Spy.net Operate?****

Spy.pet is a chat-harvesting platform that collects user data through profiles containing known aliases, pronouns, connected accounts, Discord servers, and public messages. Users must buy credits (costing $0.01 each and a minimum of 500 credits) to access profiles, and archives of conversations, and search for servers.

It only takes cryptocurrency for payments except for using a Coinbase link as it has banned Spy.net. In February 2024, the platform was DDoS’ed, but the owner claimed minimal damage.

****How to Protect Yourself?****

Discord is already investigating Spy.pet and is committed to protecting users’ privacy. The company plans to take appropriate steps if violations of its Terms of Service and Community Guidelines are found. 

Meanwhile, to protect yourself from potential risks, review your Discord privacy settings and ensure only authorized applications have access to your data. Change your password, enable two-factor authentication and be mindful of sharing personal information or sensitive content within Discord chats, even on private servers. If you suspect your account may have been compromised, report it to Discord immediately.

This Website is Selling Billions of Private Messages of Discord Users

The company belatedly conceded both that it had paid the cybercriminals extorting it and that patient data nonetheless ended up on the dark web.

More than two months after the start of a ransomware debacle whose impact ranks among the worst in the history of cybersecurity, the medical firm Change Healthcare finally confirmed what cybercriminals, security researchers, and Bitcoin's blockchain had already made all too clear: that it did indeed pay a ransom to the hackers who targeted the company in February. And yet, it still faces the risk of losing vast amounts of customers' sensitive medical data.

In a statement sent to WIRED and other news outlets on Monday evening, Change Healthcare wrote that it paid a ransom to a cybercriminal group extorting the company, a hacker gang known as AlphV or BlackCat. “A ransom was paid as part of the company’s commitment to do all it could to protect patient data from disclosure,” the statement reads. The company's belated admission of that payment accompanied a new post on its website where it warns that the hackers may have stolen health-related data that would “cover a substantial proportion of people in America.”

Cybersecurity and cryptocurrency researchers told WIRED last month that Change Healthcare appeared to have paid that ransom on March 1, pointing to a transaction of 350 bitcoins or roughly $22 million sent into a crypto wallet associated with the AlphV hackers. That transaction was first highlighted in a message on a Russian cybercriminal forum known as RAMP, where one of AlphV's allegedly jilted partners complained that they hadn't received their cut of Change Healthcare's payment. However, for weeks following that transaction, which was publicly visible on Bitcoin's blockchain and which both security firm Recorded Future and blockchain analysis firm TRM Labs told WIRED had been received by AlphV, Change Healthcare repeatedly declined to confirm that it had paid the ransom.

Change Healthcare's confirmation of that extortion payment puts new weight behind the cybersecurity industry's fears that the attack—and the profit AlphV extracted from it—will lead ransomware gangs to further target health care companies. “It 100 percent encourages other actors to target health care organizations,” Jon DiMaggio, a researcher with cybersecurity firm Analyst1 who focuses on ransomware, told WIRED at the time the transaction was first spotted in March. “And it’s one of the industries we _don’t_ want ransomware actors to target—especially when it affects hospitals.”

Compounding the situation, a conflict between hackers in the ransomware ecosystem has led to a _second_ ransomware group claiming to possess Change Healthcare's stolen data and threatening to sell it to the highest bidder on the dark web. Earlier this month that second group, known as RansomHub, sent WIRED alleged samples of the stolen data that appeared to come from Change Healthcare's network, including patient records and a contract with another health care company.

As of Monday, strangely, the listing for that data on RansomHub's dark-web site had been taken down. Change Healthcare's post to its website, however, warns that 22 screenshots of its data had been posted to the dark web by an unnamed hacker group, and that they included “protected health information (PHI) or personally identifiable information (PII),” though it said it hadn't seen any sign that medical records like doctor's charts or full medical histories for any patients were among the stolen data.

For Change Healthcare and the beleaguered medical practices, hospitals, and patients that depend on it, the confirmation of its extortion payment to the hackers adds a bitter coda to an already dystopian story. AlphV's digital paralysis of Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, snarled the insurance approval of prescriptions and medical procedures for hundreds of medical practices and hospitals across the country, making it by some measures the most widespread medical ransomware disruption ever. A survey of American Medical Association members conducted between March 26 and April 3 found that four out of five clinicians had lost revenue as a result of the crisis. Many said they were using their own personal finances to cover a practice’s expenses. Change Healthcare, meanwhile, says it has lost $872 million to the incident and projects that number to rise well over a billion in the longer term.

Change Healthcare's confirmation of its ransom payment now appears to show that much of that catastrophic fallout for the US health care system unfolded _after_ it had already paid the hackers an exorbitant sum—a payment in exchange for a decryption key for the systems the hackers had encrypted and a promise not to leak the company's stolen data. As is often the case in ransomware attacks, AlphV's disruption of its systems appears to have been so widespread that Change Healthcare's recovery process has extended long after it obtained the decryption key designed to unlock its systems.

As ransomware payments go, $22 million wouldn't be the most that a victim has forked over. But it's close, says Brett Callow, a ransomware-focused security researcher who spoke to WIRED about the suspected payment in March. Only a few rare payments, such as the $40 million paid to hackers by CNA Financial in 2021, top that number. “It’s not without precedent, but it’s certainly very unusual,” Callow said of the $22 million figure.

That $22 million injection of funds into the ransomware ecosystem further fuels a vicious cycle that has reached epidemic proportions. Cryptocurrency tracing firm Chainalysis found that in 2023, ransomware victims paid the hackers targeting them fully $1.1 billion, a new record. Change Healthcare's payment may represent only a small drop in that bucket, but it both rewards AlphV for its highly damaging attacks and may suggest to other ransomware groups that health care companies are particularly profitable targets, given those companies are especially sensitive to both the high cost of those cyberattacks financially and the risks they pose to patients' health.

Compounding Change Healthcare's mess is an apparent double-cross within the ransomware underground: AlphV, by all appearances, faked its own law enforcement takedown after receiving Change Healthcare's payment in an attempt to avoid sharing it with its so-called affiliates, the hackers who partner with the group to penetrate victims on its behalf. The second ransomware group threatening Change Healthcare, RansomHub, now claims to WIRED that they obtained the stolen data from those affiliates, who still want to be paid for their work.

That has created a situation where Change Healthcare's payment provides little assurance that its compromised data won't still be exploited by disgruntled hackers. “These affiliates work for multiple groups. They’re concerned with getting paid themselves, and there’s no trust among thieves,” Analyst1's DiMaggio told WIRED in March. “If someone screws someone else, you don’t know what they’re going to do with the data.”

All of that means Change Healthcare still has little assurance that it has avoided an even worse scenario than it has yet faced: paying what may be one of the biggest ransoms in history and still seeing its data spilled onto the dark web. “If it gets leaked after they paid $22 million, it’s pretty much like setting that money on fire,” DiMaggio warned in March. “They’d have burned that money for nothing.”

Change Healthcare Finally Admits It Paid Ransomware Hackers—and Still Faces a Patient Data Leak

The threat actor is deploying multiple connections into victim environments to maintain persistence and steal data.

An advanced persistent threat (APT) group known as ToddyCat is collecting data on an industrial scale from government and defense targets in the Asia-Pacific region.

Researchers from Kaspersky tracking the campaign described the threat actor this week as using multiple simultaneous connections into victim environments to maintain persistence and to steal data from them. They also discovered a set of new tools that ToddyCat (which is a common name for the Asian palm civet) is using to enable data collection from victim systems and browsers.

**Multiple Traffic Tunnels in ToddyCat Cyberattacks**

"Having several tunnels to the infected infrastructure implemented with different tools allow \[the\] attackers to maintain access to systems even if one of the tunnels is discovered and eliminated," Kaspersky security researchers said in a blog post this week. "By securing constant access to the infrastructure, \[the\] attackers are able to perform reconnaissance and connect to remote hosts."

ToddyCat is a likely Chinese-language speaking threat actor that Kaspersky has been able to link to attacks going back to at least December 2020. In its initial stages, the group appeared focused on just a small number of organizations in Taiwan and Vietnam. But the threat actor quickly ramped up attacks following the public disclosure of the so-called ProxyLogon vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server in February 2021. Kaspersky believes ToddyCat might have been among a group of threat actors that targeted the ProxyLogon vulnerabilities even prior to February 2021, but says it has not found evidence yet to back up that conjecture.  

In 2022, Kaspersky reported finding ToddyCat actors using two sophisticated new malware tools dubbed Samurai and Ninja to distribute China Chopper — a well-known commodity Web shell used in the Microsoft Exchange Server attacks — on systems belonging to victims in Asia and Europe.

**Maintaining Persistent Access, Fresh Malware**

Kaspersky's latest investigation into ToddyCat's activities showed the threat actor's tactic to maintain persistent remote access to a compromised network is to establish multiple tunnels to it using different tools. These include using a reverse SSH tunnel to gain access to remote network services; using SoftEther VPN, an open source tool that enables VPN connections via OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and other protocols; and using a lightweight agent (Ngrok) to redirect command-and-control from an attacker-controlled cloud infrastructure to target hosts in the victim environment.

In addition, Kaspersky researchers found ToddyCat actors to be using a fast reverse proxy client to enable access from the Internet to servers behind a firewall or network address translation (NAT) mechanism.

Kaspersky's investigation also showed the threat actor using at least three new tools in its data-collection campaign. One of them is malware that Kaspersky had dubbed "Cuthead" that allows ToddyCat to search for files with specific extensions or words on the victim network, and to store them in an archive.

Another new tool that Kaspersky found ToddyCat using is "WAExp." The malware's task is to search for and collect browser data from the Web version of WhatsApp. 

"For users of the WhatsApp web app, their browser local storage contains their profile details, chat data, the phone numbers of users they chat with and current session data," Kaspersky researchers said. WAExp allows the attacks to gain access to this data by copying the browser's local storage files, the security vendor noted.  

The third tool meanwhile is dubbed "TomBerBil," and allows ToddyCat actors to steal passwords from Chrome and Edge browsers.

"We looked at several tools that allow the attackers to maintain access to target infrastructures and automatically search for and collect data of interest," Kaspersky said. "The attackers are actively using techniques to bypass defenses in an attempt to mask their presence in the system."

The security vendor recommends that organizations block IP addresses of cloud services that provide traffic tunneling and limit the tools that administrators can use to access hosts remotely. Organizations also need to either remove or closely monitor any unused remote access tools in the environment and encourage users not to store passwords in their browsers, Kaspersky said.

ToddyCat APT Is Stealing Data on 'Industrial Scale'

The protection scheme was exposed in 2022 when Russian authorities arrested six members of the group, which sold millions of stolen payment cards at flashy online shops like Trump's Dumps.

The protection scheme was exposed in 2022 when Russian authorities arrested six members of the group, which sold millions of stolen payment cards at flashy online shops like **Trump’s Dumps**.

As reported by _The Record_, a Russian court last week sentenced former FSB officer **Grigory Tsaregorodtsev** for taking a $1.7 million bribe from a cybercriminal group that was seeking a “roof,” a well-placed, corrupt law enforcement official who could be counted on to both disregard their illegal hacking activities and run interference with authorities in the event of their arrest.

Tsaregorodtsev was head of the counterintelligence department for a division of the FSB based in Perm, Russia. In February 2022, Russian authorities arrested six men in the Perm region accused of selling stolen payment card data. They also seized multiple carding shops run by the gang, including **Ferum Shop**, **Sky-Fraud**, and **Trump’s Dumps**, a popular fraud store that invoked the 45th president’s likeness and promised to “make credit card fraud great again.”

All of the domains seized in that raid were registered by an IT consulting company in Perm called **Get-net LLC**, which was owned in part by **Artem Zaitsev** — one of the six men arrested. Zaitsev reportedly was a well-known programmer whose company supplied services and leasing to the local FSB field office.

The message for Trump’s Dumps users left behind by Russian authorities that seized the domain in 2022.

Russian news sites report that Internal Affairs officials with the FSB grew suspicious when Tsaregorodtsev became a little too interested in the case following the hacking group’s arrests. The former FSB agent had reportedly assured the hackers he could have their case transferred and that they would soon be free.

But when that promised freedom didn’t materialize, four the of the defendants pulled the walls down on the scheme and brought down their own roof. The FSB arrested Tsaregorodtsev, and seized $154,000 in cash, 100 gold bars, real estate and expensive cars.

At Tsaregorodtsev’s trial, his lawyers argued that their client wasn’t guilty of bribery per se, but that he did admit to fraud because he was ultimately unable to fully perform the services for which he’d been hired.

The Russian news outlet _Kommersant_ reports that all four of those who cooperated were released with probation or correctional labor. Zaitsev received a sentence of 3.5 years in prison, and defendant **Alexander Kovalev** got four years.

In 2017, KrebsOnSecurity profiled Trump’s Dumps, and found the contact address listed on the site was tied to an email address used to register more than a dozen domains that were made to look like legitimate Javascript calls many e-commerce sites routinely make to process transactions — such as “js-link\[dot\]su,” “js-stat\[dot\]su,” and “js-mod\[dot\]su.”

Searching on those malicious domains revealed a 2016 report from RiskIQ, which shows the domains featured prominently in a series of hacking campaigns against e-commerce websites. According to RiskIQ, the attacks targeted online stores running outdated and unpatched versions of shopping cart software from **Magento**, **Powerfront** and **OpenCart**.

Those shopping cart flaws allowed the crooks to install “web skimmers,” malicious Javascript used to steal credit card details and other information from payment forms on the checkout pages of vulnerable e-commerce sites. The stolen customer payment card details were then sold on sites like Trump’s Dumps and Sky-Fraud.

Russian FSB Counterintelligence Chief Gets 9 Years in Cybercrime Bribery Scheme

An open direct vulnerability in the Nespresso Web domain lets attackers bypass detection as they attempt to steal victims' Microsoft credentials.

A phishing campaign exploiting a bug in Nespresso's website has been able to evade detection by taking advantage of security tools that fail to look for malicious nested or hidden links.

The campaign starts with a phishing email that appears to have been sent from an employee with Bank of America, with a message to "please check your recent \[Microsoft\] sign-in activity." If a target clicks, they are then directed to a legitimate but infected URL controlled by Nespresso. according to research today from Perception Point.

Because the address is legitimate, the hijacked Nespresso site triggers no security warnings, the report explained. The Nespresso URL then delivers a malicious .html file doctored up to look like a Microsoft login page, intended to capture the victim's credentials, the Perception Point team added.

The attackers are making use of an open redirect vulnerability in the coffee giant's webpage, the researchers explained: "Open redirect vulnerabilities occur when an attacker manages to redirect users to an external, untrusted URL through a trusted domain. This is possible when a website or URL allows data to be controlled from an external source."

Attackers know that some security vendors "only inspect the initial link, not digging further to discover any hidden or embedded links," they added. "With this knowledge, it makes sense that the attacker would host the redirect on Nespresso, as the legitimate domain would likely be sufficient to bypass many security vendors, detecting only the reputable URL and not the subsequent malicious ones."

This particular campaign has been launched from several different sender domains, but it consistently uses the infected Nespresso URL and the fake Bank of America email in the cyberattacks, the report added. According to Perception Point, the redirect has not yet been fixed.

“We were alerted of a phishing attempt, where a modified redirection website link disguised as a Nespresso address was used to try to obtain personal credentials from people (not necessarily Nespresso customers)," a spokesperson tells Dark Reading. "We can confirm that our customers’ data has not been compromised in any way. We ask everyone to be aware and vigilant of emails that redirect them to unknown websites.”
