Attackers have compromised an 8-year-old version of the cloud platform to distribute various malware that can take over infected systems.

Attackers are using an 8-year-old version of the Redis open-source database server to maliciously use Metasploit's Meterpreter module to expose exploits within a system, potentially allowing for takeover and distribution of a host of other malware.

Researchers from AhnLab Security Intelligence Center (ASEC) said in a blog post that attackers likely are exploiting inappropriate settings or a vulnerability present in an implementation of Redis to distribute Meterpreter for nefarious use.

"Such malware strains attack Redis servers open to the public on the Internet with the authentication feature disabled," ASEC researcher Sanseo wrote in the post. "After gaining access to Redis, threat actors can install malware through known attack methods."

Meterpreter is an aspect of the legitimate Metasploit pen-testing tool that allows threat actors to fetch various Metasploit modules, or working exploits for known bugs, and then use them on the targeted system, according to ASEC. Metasploit is a tool similar to Cobalt Strike that also is oft-abused by threat actors to execute attacks.

"When Metasploit is installed, the threat actor can take control of the infected system and also dominate the internal network of an organization using the various features offered by the malware," Senseo explained.

**How It's Done**

Redis is an open source, in-memory data structure storage service that is increasingly being used in various ways in cloud environments; its primary purpose is typically for session management, message broker, and queues, according to ASEC. This increased prevalence also is making it a more popular target for attackers, who have abused vulnerable Redis servers to spread a host of malware, including Kinsing, P2PInfect, Skidmap, Migo, and HeadCrab.

By using Metasploit Meterpreter, there are two main attacks methods that actors can employ to spread malware once they've gained access to Redis. One is to register the malware-executing command as a Cron task, and the other is using the SLAVEOF command to set the command as the Slave server of the Redis server that has the malware.

ASEC witnessed an attack targeting a system that used Windows, along with version Redis 3.x, which was developed in 2016. The age of the abused platform means "it was likely vulnerable to attacks that abuse misconfiguration or attacks on known vulnerabilities," Senseo noted.

In the attack, the threat actor first downloaded PrintSpoofer, a privilege escalation tool, in the installation path for Redis. Attackers often use this tool against vulnerable services that are not managed properly or have not been patched to the recent version; in fact, ASEC has witnessed a flurry of these attacks against Redis since the second half of last year.

"The difference between the cases from the past and the cases now is that PrintSpoofer is installed using the CertUtil tool instead of PowerShell," Senseo explained.

**Meterpreter As Malicious Backdoor**

After installing PrintSpoofer, the threat actor installed Meterpreter Stager — one of two types of the module, the difference between which depends on the way it is installed. Meterpreter is to the Metasploit tool as Beacon is to Cobalt Strike.

When an attacker uses Stager, it means the installation is via the staged version, which downloads Meterpreter directly from the attacker's command-and-control (C2) server. This decreases its footprint version downloading it in a "stageless" way within a payload, according to ASEC.

Once this process is complete, Meterpreter is executed in the memory, which allows the threat actor to take control over the infected system and "also dominate the internal network of an organization using the various features offered by the malware," Senseo wrote.

**Update Now**

ASEC included a list of files, behaviors, and indicators of compromise of the attack in its post to help network administrators identify evidence of the threat on a system.

To avoid being compromised by the attack vector, ASEC advised that administrators of environments with Redis 3.x installed should, at the very least, update the server immediately with available patches to ensure that known vulnerabilities can't be exploited. The best-case scenario, however, would be to update V3 to the latest version of the server.

Administrators should also install security-protection software that restricts external access to Redis servers open to the Internet so they can't be identified and abused, ASEC advised.

I feel like over the past several years, the “holiday” that is April Fool’s Day has really died down. At this point, there are few headlines you can write that would be more ridiculous than something you’d find on a news site any day of the week. 

And there are so many more serious issues that are developing, too, that making a joke about a fake news story is just in bad taste, even if it’s in “celebration” of a “holiday.” 

Thankfully in the security world, I think we’ve all gotten the hint at this point that we can’t just post whatever we want on April 1 of each calendar year and expect people to get the joke. I’ve put my guard down so much at this point that I actually did legitimately fall for one April Fool’s joke from Nintendo, because I could definitely see a world in which they release a Virtual Boy box for the Switch that would allow you to play virtual reality games. 

But at least from what I saw on April 1 of this year, no one tried to “get” anyone with an April Fool’s joke about a ransomware actor requesting payment in the form of “Fortnite” in-game currency, or an internet-connected household object that in no universe needs to be connected to the internet (which, as it turns out, smart pillows exist!).  

We’re already dealing with digitally manipulated photos of “Satanic McDonalds,” Twitter’s AI generating fake news about the solar eclipse, and an upcoming presidential election that is sure to generate a slew of misinformation, AI-generated photos and more that I hesitate to even make up. 

So, all that is to say, good on you, security community, for just letting go of April Fool’s. Our lives are too stressful without bogus headlines that we, ourselves, generate.  

**The one big thing **

Talos discovered a new threat actor we’re calling “CoralRaider” that we believe is of Vietnamese origin and financially motivated. CoralRaider has been operating since at least 2023, targeting victims in several Asian and Southeast Asian countries. This group focuses on stealing victims’ credentials, financial data, and social media accounts, including business and advertisement accounts. CoralRaider appears to use RotBot, a customized variant of QuasarRAT, and XClient stealer as payloads. The actor uses the dead drop technique, abusing a legitimate service to host the C2 configuration file and uncommon living-off-the-land binaries (LoLBins), including Windows Forfiles.exe and FoDHelper.exe 

**Why do I care? **

This is a brand new actor that we believe is acting out of Vietnam, traditionally not a country who is associated with high-profile state-sponsored actors. CoralRaider appears to be after targets’ social media logins, which can later be leveraged to spread scams, misinformation, or all sorts of malicious messages using the victimized account. 

**So now what? **

CoralRaider primarily uses malicious LNK files to spread their malware, though we currently don’t know how those files are spread, exactly. Threat actors have started shifting toward using LNK files as an initial infection vector after Microsoft disabled macros by default — macros used to be a primary delivery system. **Top security headlines of the week **

**The security community is still reflecting on the “What If” of the XZ backdoor** that was discovered and patched before threat actors could exploit it. A single Microsoft developer, who works on a different open-source project, found the backdoor in xz Utils for Linux distributions several weeks ago seemingly on accident, and is now being hailed as a hero by security researchers and professionals. Little is known about the user who had been building the backdoor in the open-source utility for at least two years. Had it been exploited, the vulnerability would have allowed its creator to hijack a user’s SSH connection and secretly run their own code on that user’s machine. The incident is highlighting networking’s reliance on open-source projects, which are often provided little resource and usually only maintained as a hobby, for free, by individuals who have no connection to the end users. The original creator of xz Utils worked alone for many years, before they had to open the project because of outside stressors and other work. Government officials have also been alarmed by the near-miss, and are now considering new ways to protect open-source software. (New York Times, Reuters) 

**AT&T now says that more than 51 million users were affected by a data breach** that exposed their personal information on a hacking forum. The cable, internet and cell service provider has still not said how the information was stolen. The incident dates back to 2021, when threat actor ShinyHunters initially offered the data for sale for $1 million. However, that data leaked last month on a hacking forum belonging to an actor known as “MajorNelson.” AT&T’s notification to affected customers stated that, "The \[exposed\] information varied by individual and account, but may have included full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and AT&T passcode." The company has also started filing required formal notifications with U.S. state authorities and regulators. While AT&T initially denied that the data belonged to them, reporters and researchers soon found that the information were related to AT&T and DirecTV (a subsidiary of AT&T) accounts. **Another ransomware group claims they’ve stolen data from United HealthCare, though there is little evidence yet to prove their claim.** Change Health, a subsidiary of United, was recently hit with a massive data breach, pausing millions of dollars of payments to doctors and healthcare facilities to be paused for more than a month. Now, the ransomware gang RansomHub claims it has 4TB of data, requesting an extortion payment from United, or it says it will start selling the data to the highest bidder 12 days from Monday. RansomHub claims the stolen information contains the sensitive data of U.S. military personnel and patients, as well as medical records and financial information. Blackcat initially stated they had stolen the data, but the group quickly deleted the post from their leak site. A person representing RansomHub told Reuters that a disgruntled affiliate of Blackcat gave the data to RansomHub after a previous planned payment fell through. (DarkReading, Reuters)

The internet is already scary enough without April Fool’s jokes

Microsoft has fixed 149 vulnerabilities, two of which are reportedly being exploited in the wild.

The April 2024 Patch Tuesday update includes patches for 149 Microsoft vulnerabilities and republishes 6 non-Microsoft CVEs. Three of those 149 vulnerabilities are listed as critical, and one is listed as actively exploited by Microsoft. Another vulnerability is claimed to be a zero-day by researchers that have found it to be used in the wild.

Let’s first have a look at the two zero-days. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database lists publicly disclosed computer security flaws. The CVEs for these two vulnerabilities are:

CVE-2024-26234 (CVSS score 6.7 out of 10): a proxy driver spoofing vulnerability that Microsoft listed as “Exploitation detected” hours after it initially listed it as non-exploited.

In fact, the patch is a revocation of a Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher signature that was used to sign a file which contained a backdoor using an embedded proxy server to monitor and intercept network traffic on an infected Windows machine. Apparently, the software, designed to remote-control phones, was used to make them act like online bots, collectively liking posts, following people on social media, and posting comments.

CVE-2024-29988 (CVSS score 8.8 out of 10): a SmartScreen prompt security feature bypass vulnerability. Microsoft still has this listed as “Exploitation More Likely” and acknowledges the fact that functional exploit code is available. Which means that the exploit code works in most situations where the vulnerability exists.

One reason for the contradiction could be that the exploitation requires some form of user interaction. It requires an attacker to get the victim to click on a link or open a file. If the victim falls for that, the bug allows the attacker to bypass the SmartScreen security feature in Windows that’s supposed to alert users to any untrusted websites or other threats.

Researchers said that attackers are using the weakness to send targets exploits in a zipped file which bypasses the Mark of the Web (MotW) warnings, a warning message users should see when trying to open a file downloaded from the internet.

The exploit for the vulnerability was called “trivial” and “embarrassingly easy” by the researchers that wrote about it.

A few applications that deserve some of your attention if you’re using them are SQL Server (38 vulnerabilities), and Windows Remote Access Connection Manager (9).

Other vendors have synchronized their periodic updates with Microsoft. Here are few major ones that you may find in your environment.

The **Android** Security Bulletin for April 2024 contains details of security vulnerabilities for patch level 2024-04-05 or later.

 Microsoft’s April 2024 Patch Tuesday includes two actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities 

Much of the open source code embedded in enterprise software stacks comes from small, under-resourced, volunteer-run projects.

The recent discovery of a backdoor in the XZ Utils data compression utility — present in nearly all major Linux distributions — is a stark reminder that organizations who consume open source components ultimately own responsibility for securing the software.

XZ Utils, like thousands of other open source projects, is volunteer-run and, in its case, has a single maintainer managing it. Such projects often have little to no resources for handling security issues, meaning organizations use the software at their own risk. That means security and development teams must implement measures for managing open source risk the same way they do with internally developed code, security experts say.

"While it's unlikely an organization can effectively prevent \[all\] exposure to supply chain risks, organizations can absolutely focus on a strategy to reduce the probability that a supply chain attack is successful," says Jamie Scott, founding product manager at Endor Labs.

Open source is not the same as outsourcing: "Open source maintainers of software are volunteers. At an industry level, we need to treat them as such. We own our software; we are responsible for the software we re-use."

**Well-Intentioned, Under-Resourced**

Concerns over open source software security are by no means new. But it often takes discoveries like the Log4Shell vulnerability and the backdoor in XZ Utils to really drive home just how vulnerable organizations are to components in their code. And often, the code comes from well-intentioned yet hopelessly under-resourced open source projects that are minimally maintained.

XZ Utils, for instance, is essentially a one-person project. Another individual managed to sneak the backdoor into the utility over a nearly three-year period, by gradually gaining enough trust from the project maintainer. If a Microsoft developer had not chanced upon it in late March when investigating odd behavior associated with a Debian installation, the backdoor might well have ended up on millions of devices globally — including those belonging to large corporations and government agencies. As it turned out, the backdoor had minimal impact because it affected versions of XZ Utils that were only present in unstable and beta versions of Debian, Fedora, Kali, open SUSE, and Arch Linux.

The next such open source code compromise could be far worse. "The scariest part for enterprise organizations is that their applications are built on top of open source software projects just like XZ Utils," says Donald Fischer, co-founder and CEO of Tidelift. "XZ Utils is one package of tens of thousands that are in use every day by typical enterprise organizations," he says.

Most of these organizations lack sufficient visibility into the security and resilience of this part of their software supply chain to be able to evaluate risk, he notes.

A recent Harvard Business School study estimated the demand-side value of open source software to be an astonishing $8.8 trillion. Maintainers are at the core of this ecosystem and many of them are flying solo, Fischer says. A survey conducted by Tidelift last year found 44% of open source project maintainers describe themselves as the sole maintainers of their projects. Sixty percent identified themselves as unpaid hobbyists, and the same percentage said they have either quit or have considered quitting their roles as project maintainers. Many maintainers described their efforts as stressful, lonely, and financially unrewarding work, Fischer says.

"The XZ utils hack brings into stark relief the risks of under-investing in the health and resilience of the open source software supply chain \[that\] enterprise organizations rely on," Fischer says. "Enterprise organizations need to realize that the majority of the most relied-upon open source packages are maintained by volunteers who describe themselves as unpaid hobbyists. These maintainers are not enterprise suppliers but are expected to work and deliver like them."

**Danger: Transitive Dependencies**

A study that Endor conducted in 2022 found that 95% of open source vulnerabilities are present in so-called transitive dependencies, or secondary open source packages or libraries that a primary open-source package might depend upon. Often, these are packages that developers don't directly select themselves but are automatically employed by an open source package in their development project.

"For example, when you trust one Maven package, on average there are an additional 14 dependencies you implicitly trust as a result," Scott says. "This number is even larger in certain software ecosystems such as NPM where you on average import 77 other software components for every one you trust."

One way to start start mitigating open source risks is to pay attention to these dependencies and be selective about what projects you choose, he says.

Organizations should vet dependencies, especially the smaller, one-off-packages, manned by one- and two-person teams, adds Dimitri Stiliadis, Endor's CTO and co-founder. They should determine if dependencies in their environment have proper security controls or if a single individual commits all code; whether they have binary files in their repositories that no one knows about; or even if someone is actively maintaining the project at all, Stiliadis says.

"Focus your efforts on improving your response effectiveness — foundational controls such as maintaining a mature software inventory remains one of the highest value programs you can have in place to quickly identify, scope, and respond to software risks once they're identified," Scott advises.

Software-composition analysis tools, vulnerability scanners, EDR/XDR systems, and SBOMs can also all help organizations quickly identify vulnerable and compromised open source components.

**Acknowledging the Threat**

"Mitigating exposure starts with shared understanding and acknowledgement in the C-suite and even at the board level that roughly 70% of the ingredients of the average software product are open source software historically created by mostly uncompensated contributors," Tidelift's Fischer says.  

New regulations and guidelines in the financial services industry, the FDA, and NIST will shape how software is developed in the years ahead and organizations need to prepare for them now. "Winners here will quickly adapt from a reactive strategy to a proactive strategy to managing open source-related risk," he says.

Fischer recommends that organizations get their security and engineering teams to identify how new open source components come into their environment. They should also define roles for monitoring these components and proactively remove ones that don't fit the company's risk appetite. "Reacting to late stage problems has become an ineffective way to deal with the scale of the risk to the business over the last several years, and the US Government is signaling that era is coming to an end," he says.

XZ Utils Scare Exposes Hard Truths About Software Security

Various anti-detection features, including the use of the ScrubCrypt antivirus-evasion tool, fuel an attack that aims to take over Microsoft Windows machines.

A newly exposed corporate phishing campaign targeting Microsoft Windows users is delivering a flurry of remote access Trojans (RATs) and other malware under the cover of multiple detection-evasion techniques.

The attackers behind the campaign try to lure users into clicking on an attachment that ultimately employs the tool ScrubCrypt to deliver primarily the VenomRAT version 6, although various other oft-used malware also are associated with the campaign, researchers from Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs Threat Research revealed in a blog post.

While the RAT maintains a connection with attackers' command-and-control (C2) server, the attack drops plug-ins including Remcos RAT, XWorm, NanoCore RAT, and a stealer designed for specific crypto wallets, according to the researchers.

Ultimately the campaign is aimed at stealing critical data from targeted systems — ostensibly to be used in future attacks — as well achieving persistence on a victim's network, according to the post.

"The attackers employ a variety of methods, including phishing emails with malicious attachments, obfuscated script files, and Guloader PowerShell, to infiltrate and compromise victim systems," wrote Cara Lin, senior antivirus analyst at Fortinet. "Furthermore, deploying plugins through different payloads highlights the versatility and adaptability of the attack campaign."

VenomRAT is a tool used previously by the 8220 Gang, a cybercriminal group that uses a powerful botnet as its weapon of choice. ScrubCrypt, meanwhile, converts executables into undetectable batch files, providing "several options to manipulate malware, making it more challenging for antivirus products to detect," Lin noted.

**Phony Invoice Phish**

The campaign typically starts with a phishing email stating that a shipment has been delivered with an attached "invoice" that is actually an SVG file named "INV0ICE\_#TBSBVS0Y3BDSMMX.svg" and contains embedded base64-encoded data.

If a targeted user opens the SVG file, the ECMAScript creates a new blob and utilizes "window.URL.createObjectURL" to drop the decoded data as a ZIP file named "INV0ICE\_#TBSBVS0Y3BDSMMX.zip." The decompressed file reveals an obfuscated batch file with an embedded payload that appears to be created by the BatCloak tool, which distributes malware while effectively evading detection by antivirus program, Lin explained.

The embedded script initially copies a PowerShell execution file to "C:\\Users\\Public\\xkn.exe" and utilizes the copied file in later commands, using parameters that conceal its activity. It then decodes the malicious data and saves it as "pointer.png," which is later executed as "pointer.cmd" and deletes all the previously executed files.

**ScrubCrypt Delivers VenomRAT**

The "pointer.cmd" file serves as the ScrubCrypt batch file, and it's "deliberately cluttered with numerous junk strings to obscure readability," Lin wrote. The file incorporates two payloads, the first of which serves two primary purposes: establishing persistence and loading the targeted malware, VenomRAT. The second payload from the ScrubCrypt batch file is for AMSI bypass and ETW bypass, she noted.

VenomRAT was first identified in 2020 and uses a modified version of the well-known Quasar RAT. It allows attackers to gain unauthorized access and control over targeted systems. "As with other RATs, VenomRAT enables attackers to manipulate compromised devices remotely, allowing them to execute various malicious activities without the victim's knowledge or consent," Lin wrote.

Once deployed, VenomRAT initiates communication with its C2 server to send information about the victim, such as hardware specifications, username, operating system details, camera availability, execution path, foreground window name, and the name of the antivirus product installed. It then maintains communication channels with the C2 server to acquire the aforementioned additional plugins for related and other malicious activities as the attack continues from there, Lin wrote.

Notable among those plugins are three RATs often used for various nefarious purposes, including the Remcos RAT, which gives attackers complete system control to capture keystrokes, screenshots, credentials, and other sensitive information; NanoCore RAT, which can remotely access and control a victim's computer; and Xworm, which can load ransomware or act as a persistent backdoor.

**Vigilance Required**

Because this cyberattack campaign uses multiple layers of obfuscation and evasion techniques, it's important for enterprises to stay vigilant.

"The attackers' ability to persist in the system, evade detection, and execute malicious payloads underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and vigilant monitoring to mitigate such threats effectively," Lin noted.

Organizations should educate users about the hallmark signs of phishing campaigns and encourage them to report suspicious activity to IT departments, as well as avoid downloading files or clicking on links from untrusted sources.

Despite its evasive tactics, a strong antivirus-detection system should pick up the malware entering a network, and one that includes a content disarm-and-reconstruction service also is helpful to disable the malicious macros in the document before they can do any harm, Lin wrote.

Fortiguard included a list of indicators of compromise for the specific VenomRAT campaign in the post, including associated C2 domains, URLs associated with the attack, and files the attack distributes.

Cagey Phishing Campaign Delivers Multiple RATs to Steal Windows Data

The company is asking users to retire several network-attached storage (NAS) models to avoid compromise through a publicly available exploit that results in backdooring.

A critical flaw in several end-of-life (EOL) models of D-Link network-attached storage (NAS) devices can allow attackers to backdoor the device and gain access to sensitive information, among other nefarious activities.

More than 92,000 devices currently connected to the Internet are affected by a flaw tracked as CVE-2024-3273 in D-Link NAS devices, including models DNS-340L, DNS-320L, DNS-327L, and DNS-325, according to D-Link. As a result, the company is asking customers to sunset any and all affected devices, which will remain vulnerable as the devices no longer receive updates or support from the vendor.

A researcher who goes by the online name "netsecfish" identified the flaw and detailed it on GitHub and subsequently informed D-Link about it, which released its own advisory. The researcher also released an exploit for the flaw, in which attackers already are showing interest, according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Shadowserver.

"We have started to see scans/exploits from multiple IPs for CVE-2024-3273," according to the post. "This involves chaining of a backdoor and command injection to achieve RCE."

Flaws in NAS devices are serious business, as exploiting them has great potential to affect not only the device itself but myriad devices that connect to it, posing a dangerous threat that can expose enterprise networks to risk.

**Data Theft, Denial of Service & More**

The vulnerability exists in the nas\_sharing.cgi CGI script, leading to backdooring through username and password exposure as well as command injection through the system parameter, explained netsecfish.

"Affected is an unknown function of the file /cgi-bin/nas\_sharing.cgi of the component HTTP GET Request Handler," according to the listing for the flaw in the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST's) National Vulnerability Database. "The manipulation of the argument system leads to command injection."

To get more granular, in terms of username and password exposure, the problem lies in the request, which "includes parameters for a username (user=messagebus) and an empty password field (passwd=)," according to netsecfish. "This indicates a backdoor allowing unauthorized access without proper authentication."

For command injection, attackers can exploit the "system" parameter within the request, "which carries a base64 encoded value that, when decoded, appears to be a command," according to netsecfish.

Attackers can chain the two issues together to obtain arbitrary command execution on the affected D-Link NAS devices, granting attackers potential access to sensitive information, system configuration alteration, or denial of service.

Netsecfish's exploit entails crafting malicious HTTP requests by preparing an HTTP GET request–GET /cgi-bin/nas\_sharing.cgi?user=messagebus&passwd=&cmd=15&system=<BASE64\_ENCODED\_COMMAND\_TO\_BE\_EXECUTED>–targeting the /cgi-bin/nas\_sharing.cgi endpoint.

**Replace & Retire Vulnerable D-Link Devices**

A report published last year found that companies in every industry continue to leave backup and storage platforms unsecured, making it crucial for them to ensure cybercriminals can't exploit vulnerable ones to enter corporate networks.

With no forthcoming patch for CVE-2024-3273, the only true remedy is not to use affected devices at all, so anyone with one still connected to a network should retire and replace the product immediately, according to D-Link. A complete list of devices can be found in D-Link's advisory.

Indeed, the company remained adamant that it has no plans to support or update the affected products as per its typical device EOL strategy. "Regardless of product type or sales channel, D-Link's general policy, when products reach EOS/EOL, they can no longer be supported, and all firmware development for these products cease," according to D-Link.

If consumers in the US continue to use the device against the company's recommendation, they should "please make sure the device has the last know firmware," which can be located on a Legacy Website links included in the advisory, according to D-Link.

Anyone who wants to continue using the device also should ensure frequent updating of the device's unique password to access its Web configuration, as well enable Wi-Fi encryption with a unique password.

92K D-Link NAS Devices Open to Critical Command-Injection Bug

An ongoing cyberattack campaign with apparent ties to China uses a new version of sophisticated JavaScript remote access Trojan JSOutProx and is now targeting banks in the Middle East.

The sophisticated threat group behind a complex JavaScript remote access Trojan (RAT) known as JSOutProx has released a new version of the malware to target organizations in the Middle East.

Cybersecurity services firm Resecurity analyzed technical details of multiple incidents involving the JSOutProx malware targeting financial customers and delivering either a fake SWIFT payment notification if targeting an enterprise, or a MoneyGram template when targeting private citizens, the company wrote in a report published this week. The threat group has targeted government organizations in India and Taiwan, as well as financial organizations in the Philippines, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, India — and now Saudi Arabia.

The newest version of JSOutProx is a very flexible and well-organized program from a development perspective, allowing the attackers to tailor is functionality for the victim's specific environment, says Gene Yoo, CEO of Resecurity.

"It's a malware implant with multiple stages, and it has multiple plug-ins," he says. "Depending on the victim's environment, it goes right in and then actually bleeds them or poisons the environment, depending on what plug-ins are enabled."

The attacks are the latest campaign by a cybercriminal group known as Solar Spider, which appears to be the only group using the JSOutProx malware. Based on the group's targets — typically organizations in India, but also in the Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Middle East regions — it's likely linked to China, Resecurity stated in its analysis.

"By profiling the targets, and some of the details that we obtained in the infrastructure, we suspect that it's related to China," Yoo says.

**"Highly Obfuscated ... Modular Plug-in"**

JSOutProx is well known in the financial industry. Visa, for example, documented campaigns using the attack tool in 2023, including one pointed at several banks in the Asia-Pacific region, the company stated in its Biannual Threats Report published in December.

The remote access Trojan (RAT) is a "highly obfuscated JavaScript backdoor, which has modular plugin capabilities, can run shell commands, download, upload, and execute files, manipulate the file system, establish persistence, take screenshots, and manipulate keyboard and mouse events," Visa stated in its report. "These unique features allow the malware to evade detection by security systems and obtain a variety of sensitive payment and financial information from targeted financial institutions.

JSOutProx typically appears as a PDF file of a financial document in a zip archive. But really, it's JavaScript that executes when a victim opens the file. The first stage of the attack collects information on the system and communicates with command-and-control servers obfuscated via dynamic DNS. The second stage of the attack downloads any of some 14 plug-ins to conduct further attacks, including gaining access to Outlook and the user's contact list, and enabling or disabling proxies on the system.

The RAT downloads plugins from GitHub — or more recently, GitLab — to appear legitimate.

"The discovery of the new version of JSOutProx, coupled with the exploitation of platforms like GitHub and GitLab, emphasizes these malicious actors’ relentless efforts and sophisticated consistency," Resecurity said in its analysis.

**Monetizing Data From Middle East Financials**

Once Solar Spider compromises a user, the attackers collect information, such as primary account numbers and user credentials, and then conduct a variety of malicious actions against the victim, according to Visa's threat report.

"The JSOutProx malware poses a serious threat to financial institutions around the world, and especially those in the AP region as those entities have been more frequently targeted with this malware," the Visa report stated.

Companies should educate employees about how to handle unsolicited, suspicious correspondence to mitigate the threat of the malware, Visa stated. In addition, any instance of the malware must be investigated and completely remediated to prevent reinfection.

Bigger companies and government agencies are more likely to be attacked by the group because Solar Spider has its sights on the most successful firms, Resecurity's Yoo says. For the most part, however, companies don't have to take threat-specific steps but instead focus on defense-in-depth strategies, he says.

"The user should focus on not looking at the shiny object in the sky, like the Chinese are attacking, but on what they need to do is create a better foundation," Yoo says. "Having good patching, network segmentation, and vulnerability management. If you do that, then none of this would" likely impact your users.

It’s been a week since the world avoided a potentially catastrophic cyberattack. On March 29, Microsoft developer Andres Freund disclosed his discovery of a backdoor in XZ Utils, a compression tool widely used in Linux distributions and thus countless computer systems worldwide. The backdoor was inserted into the open source tool by someone operating under the persona “Jia Tan” after years of patient work building a reputation as a trustworthy volunteer developer. Security experts believe Jia Tan is the work of a nation-state actor, with clues largely pointing to Russia, although definitive attribution for the attack is still outstanding.

In early 2022, a hacker operating under the name “P4x” took down the internet of North Korea, after the country’s hackers had targeted him. This week, WIRED revealed P4x’s true identity as Alejandro Caceres, a 38-year-old Colombian American. Following his successful attack on North Korea, Caceres pitched the US military on a “special forces”-style offensive hacking team that would carry out operations similar to the one that made P4x famous. The Pentagon eventually declined, but Caceres has launched a startup, Hyperion Gray, and plans to further pursue his controversial approach to cyberwarfare.

In mid-February, millions of people lost internet access after three undersea cables in the Arabian Sea were damaged. Some blamed Houthi rebels in Yemen, who had been attacking ships in the region, but the group denied it had sabotaged the cables. But the rebel attacks are still likely to blame—albeit, in a bizarre way. A WIRED analysis of satellite images, maritime data, and more found that the cables were likely damaged by the trailing anchor of a cargo ship that the Houthi rebels had bombed. The ship drifted for two weeks before finally sinking, crossing paths with the cables at the time they were damaged.

The myth that Google Chrome’s Incognito mode provides adequate privacy protections can finally be put to rest. As part of a settlement over Google’s Incognito privacy claims and practices, the company has agreed to delete “billions” of records collected while users browsed in Incognito mode. A 58-year-old hospital systems administrator pleaded guilty this week to US federal charges after he was caught using another man’s name for more than 30 years. Matthew David Keirans allegedly stole the identity of William Woods in 1988, when the two men worked at a hot dog cart in Albuquerque, New Mexico, according to the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa. Over the decades, Keirans obtained employment, bank accounts, loans, and insurance, and paid taxes, under the Woods name. Keirans even had a child whose last name is Woods.

The real William Woods, meanwhile, reportedly learned that someone else was using his identity in 2019. At the time, Woods was unhoused and living in Los Angeles. He contacted a bank where “William Woods” had an account, providing his real Social Security card and California ID card to prove his identity. However, he could not answer the security questions to gain access. The bank called Keirans—who was pretending to be Woods—and Keirans convinced the bank employee that the real Woods should not have access to the accounts. The Los Angeles Police Department then arrested the real Woods and charged him with identity theft after Keirans provided officers with false documents and information.

In a nightmarish twist, during judicial proceedings, the real Woods accurately maintained that “William Donald Woods” was his true identity, prompting the court to order him to a mental institution. The real Woods ultimately spent 428 days in jail and 147 days in a mental hospital before his release.

The real Woods then continued to work to regain his true identity, eventually contacting authorities after learning that Keirans worked at a hospital in Iowa City. Investigators later confirmed the real Woods’ identity after obtaining a DNA test. Confronted with the evidence, Keirans confessed to a series of crimes and now faces a maximum sentence of 32 years in prison, a $1.25 million fine, and five years of supervised release.

**US Review Board Slams Microsoft for ‘Cascade of Avoidable Security Failures’**

The White-House mandated Cyber Safety Review Board issued a scathing report against Microsoft this week, accusing the tech giant of failing to stop a “preventable” intrusion by China-backed hackers of hundreds of Microsoft Exchange Online email accounts. To gain access to email accounts belonging to 22 organizations and 500 individuals worldwide, the hackers, known as Storm-0558, stole a Microsoft cryptographic key. The CSRB report chastises the company for failing to detect “the compromise of its cryptographic crown jewels,” inadequate security practices, and a “corporate culture that deprioritized both enterprise security investments and rigorous risk management,” among a “cascade” of other defeats.

The report also found that Microsoft still does not know how Storm-0558 obtained its key, accusing the company of making false statements after it initially claimed that the key was accidentally included in an April 2021 “crash dump.” The company has since updated its explanation of the intrusion to say that it still does not know how the hackers obtained the key. The CSRB issued 25 recommended steps that Microsoft—a major government contractor whose systems protect highly sensitive information—should take to better protect its systems.

**AI-Generated Lawyers Caught Spewing Fake Legal Threats**

The owner of the website Tedium received legal threats from a nonexistent “law firm” charging the publication with a copyright violation. The thing is, the “lawyers” behind the complaint were AI-generated. The “law firm” accused Tedium of using a photograph without the owner’s consent, and a "copyright infringement" notice offered to supposedly settle the matter, if only Tedium would agree to properly credit the photo’s “owner” and link out to their website. This was, of course, a backlink scam designed to boost the SEO ranking of the fake copyright holder’s page. Only this time, the scam was bolstered by a cast of AI-generated characters: a hot-shot team of young, "skilled lawyers" purportedly specializing in creative rights and commercial law.

**Data Behemoth Enlists Lobbyists Against Effort in US to Limit Deals With Spies**

An internal feud is underway in the US Congress over the fate of a beleaguered spy program called Section 702 and the commercial deals that US intelligence agencies have struck in recent years with global data brokers, purchasing information that government agents typically need a warrant to obtain. Consequently, the UK owner of LexisNexis—an “amalgam of publishers and data brokers, stitched together into a single information giant”—has retained the services of a Washington, DC, lobbying firm to engage with federal lawmakers over “potential privacy, data security, breach notification, data broker, and FISA reform legislation.” Politico reports that the company, RELX, previously used the firm, Venable, to combat privacy legislation aimed at restricting the kinds of personal data companies are allowed to sell to law enforcement.

**‘Weapon Scanners’ Eyed by New York’s Surveillant Mayor Boasts Abysmal Track Record**

New York City mayor Eric Adams is hastening his crusade against subway violence with a plan to test weapons scanners that claim to use artificial intelligence to detect whether commuters are carrying blades and firearms. Documents obtained by Hell Gate reveal what Adams failed to disclose at a press conference last week: that data already in the city’s hands show the technology is only rarely useful. After police officers permitted to carry firearms were factored out of one study at a Bronx hospital, the scanners were found to be accurate less than 1 percent of the time. (All told, more than 85 percent of the time, the scanners cast false suspicion on New Yorkers who were found to be unarmed.) The move by Adams follows New York governor Kathy Hochul’s deployment of hundreds of National Guard soldiers in the city’s subway systems. Adams first addressed a spate of homicides and stabbings across the city in March by sending hundreds of police officers underground to search commuters' bags at well over 100 subway stations—a tactic that roused resistance from a few locals this week who smashed ticket machines and disabled security cameras at a midtown station to protest the surveillance surge.

Identity Thief Lived as a Different Man for 33 Years

The infamous payment-skimmer cybercrime organization is exploiting CVE-2024-20720 in Magento for a novel approach to stealing card data.

Magecart attackers have a new trick: Stashing persistent backdoors within e-commerce websites that are capable of pushing malware automatically.

According to researchers at Sansec, the threat actors are exploiting a critical command injection vulnerability in the Adobe Magento e-commerce platform (CVE-2024-20720, CVSS score of 9.1), which allows arbitrary code execution without user interaction.

The executed code is a "cleverly crafted layout template" in the layout\_update database table, which contains XML shell code that automatically injects malware into compromised sites via the controller for the Magento content management system (CMS).

"Attackers combine the Magento layout parser with the beberlei/assert package (installed by default) to execute system commands," Sansec said in an alert. "Because the layout block is tied to the checkout cart, this command is executed whenever <store>/checkout/cart is requested."

Sansec observed Magecart (a long-running umbrella organization for cybercrime groups that skim payment card data from e-commerce sites) using this technique to inject a Stripe payment skimmer, which captures and exfiltrates payment data to an attacker-controlled site.

Adobe resolved the security bug in February in both Adobe Commerce and Magento, so e-tailers should upgrade their versions to 2.4.6-p4, 2.4.5-p6, or 2.4.4-p7 to be protected from the threat.
