Introduction to confidential virtual machines

In this post, we will present confidential virtual machines (CVMs) as one of the use cases of confidential computing as well as the security benefits expected from this emerging technology. We will focus on the high level requirements for the Linux guest operating system to ensure data confidentiality both in use and at rest. This blog follows the recent release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 running on Azure Confidential VMs. CVMs are also a critical building block for the upcoming OpenShift confidential containers in OpenShift 4.13 (dev-preview). CVE-2023-2904: Security Center | HID Global

The External Visitor Manager portal of HID’s SAFE versions 5.8.0 through 5.11.3 are vulnerable to manipulation within web fields in the application programmable interface (API). An attacker could log in using account credentials available through a request generated by an internal user and then manipulate the visitor-id within the web API to access the personal data of other users. There is no limit on the number of requests that can be made to the HID SAFE Web Server, so an attacker could also exploit this vulnerability to create a denial-of-service condition.

GHSA-5fm9-h728-fwpj: trust-dns vulnerable to Remote Attackers causing Denial-of-Service (packet loops) with crafted DNS packets

trust-dns and trust-dns-server are vulnerable to remotely triggered denial-of-service attacks, consuming both network and CPU resources. DNS messages with the QR=1 bit set are responded to with a `FormErr` response. This allows creating a traffic loop, in which these `FormErr` responses are sent nonstop between vulnerable servers. There are two scenarios how this can be exploited: 1) Create a loop between two instances of trust-dns, consuming network resources, or 2) consuming the CPU of a single instance. With two instances *A* and *B* an attacker sends a DNS query with a spoofed source IP address to *A*. *A* replies with a `FormErr` to *B*. Now both servers with ping-pong the message back and forth until by chance the packet is dropped in the network. Multiple spoofed packets can be sent by the attacker, increasing resource consumption.
