Now imagine this feeling, but taken to a new level, where the virtual world feels more interesting and important than the real one.

But haven’t you noticed that we’ve been living this way for the past ten years? Tinder, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are gradually consuming several hours of our time every day.

Here’s an example of how a man psychologically disappears in a game. There is a character in World of Warcraft. In virtual reality, this person is a hero, an idol who is looked up to. And what about real life?

There is an ordinary office worker in glasses in a cool unit, whom sometimes even the cleaning lady does not notice. Where would this person be more comfortable? Of course, where he or she is a role model. It’s like choosing what to have for tea: a sweet cake with thick whipping cream or sauerkraut. Well, obviously, in terms of psychology, the man will choose the virtual world in the given situation.

Now imagine that all your communication, work, and even cultural events have shifted to the digital world, the metaverse. Without leaving home, you arrange business meetings, go to concerts, and have fun with friends. It seems like science fiction but it is already a reality.

Travis Scott has collected 12 million viewers in Fortnite. Why go to a real stadium if you can go to a popular rapper’s concert without leaving your home? And without being afraid of a crowd of fans or risking being trampled. Convenient, right?

More and more people understand that there is no point in wasting time in traffic jams if you can solve everything online. And this is just the beginning.

****Economic disappearancе****

Now imagine that money also goes into the virtual world. No, it’s not just about cryptocurrency. People buy virtual land for millions of dollars, sew clothes for avatars, and collect NFTs, like previous stamps or coins.

Here’s an example. Someone bought a Gucci bag in Roblox for $4,000. Although it cost more than in real life, it was still bought. For some, this bag is a way to show status, even in the game.

If you look closely, the “disappearance of reality” has already begun. The only thing is that it’s not as bright as in science fiction movies. We do not connect wires to our heads to get into the virtual world, but, it looks like, we are gradually disappearing there.

For example, in 2021, someone bought a plot of land in Decentraland for $2 million. This is virtual land, you can’t even touch it! Tomorrow the server will burn out, the Internet will be turned off, and no one will remember it. However, for such people, this is not a game, but an investment. They believe that tomorrow virtual real estate will become even more valuable.

The same thing with clothes, which we love to buy in reality. Now imagine that you are buying not a jacket or sneakers, but a skin for your avatar. You do not understand why, but thousands of people around the world do this. In games like Fortnite or Holiverse, this is completely normal because people pursue their own goals there.

For the buyer, this is a matter of status. Because this bag makes his avatar authentic. And that’s cool.

Why is this cool? Here’s an example. A virtual character under the nickname Lil Мiquelа lives only on the Internet. In reality, no one fully understands how she appeared.

Although Miquela does not exist in real life, millions of subscribers follow her on Instagram. She advertises brands, stars in campaigns, and even releases music. Her creators earn millions, and for subscribers, she is “more than real.”

**Holiverse: аvatar as a digital twin**

Just imagine: you take a sample of your DNA at home, and within a couple of days, you receive a digital copy of yourself, an avatar that lives in a virtual world, mimics your behaviour, and adapts to reflect any changes. This avatar does not just copy your body, it knows exactly how your body will react to different physical loads, food products and even cosmetics. This concept is being developed by the **Holiverse** startup, led by Lado Okhotnikov.

The idea looks fresh. Instead of wasting time and money on trying different medicines, you can use your virtual double. For example, you can:

*   find out how your physical condition will change if you add new workouts;
*   try which products will improve your life and which ones you better exclude;
*   test supplements or medicine that you are planning to take.

Lado Okhotnikov and his team emphasize user accessibility. To create a digital copy, you just need to take a DNA test at home, using a test kit that can be purchased at a pharmacy near your home or on a marketplace. Then you will need to send this sample to the lab, and after a short period, you will receive an exact copy of yourself: an avatar that can predict your body’s reactions with incredible accuracy.

The main advantage of Holiverse is the cost of the service. Lado Okhotnikov aims to make this technology available to everyone, turning personalized medicine from luxury into a necessity.

**Luma: turns text into video**

**Luma AI** presented Dream Machine; a service that “brings the text to life.” In terms of quality, the neural network is almost as good as Sora, one of the most powerful generative models. But this startup has a big advantage; Dream Machine is available to everyone. The neural network works on a new architecture and is already bypassing competitors like Runway Gen-2 or Pika. The video is realistic: without jerks, and the characters look natural and are not distorted.

Although the videos are short, a year ago this was considered science fiction. In a year or two, the service may be able to offer something truly significant. For example, tools for generating full-fledged virtual worlds.

Who knows, maybe in a few years we will be able to design entire virtual cities at home in a couple of minutes, simply by describing them in words. Or turn our ideas into animated films available to a million audience in metaverses.

****And what’s next?****

Being scared of technology is the same as trying to stop progress. However, even with the advent of that very virtual reality which everyone is talking about, real life will not go anywhere. You will still go to stores, equipment will still break down, and someone will still come to fix it. The virtual world can captivate, but it will not replace everything. It will not be possible to give up reality quickly and painlessly.

Google Project Zero Researcher Uncovers Zero-Click Exploit Targeting Samsung Devices

Texas has become a leading enforcer of internet rules. Its latest probe includes some platforms that privacy experts describe as unusual suspects.

Over the past decade, Texas attorney general Ken Paxton has wielded his office’s significant resources to investigate well-known tech giants including Google and Meta over how they moderate content and treat rivals. He helped win settlements against Apple for allegedly misleading users and is suing TikTok for allegedly endangering children's privacy. Now, Paxton’s latest tech investigation includes an expansive number of targets, WIRED has learned.

Rumble, Quora, and WeChat are among the 15 companies from which Texas has demanded answers by next week about their collection and use of data of people under 18 years old. Paxton announced the investigation in a press release last month but named only four of the companies being probed—Character.AI, Red­dit, Insta­gram, and Dis­cord. WIRED obtained the names of additional targeted companies through a public records request. They also include Kick, Kik, Pinterest, Telegram, Twitch, Tumblr, WhatsApp, and Whisper.

Paxton’s office did not respond to requests for comment, including about how it chose which businesses to investigate. But the variety of companies questioned highlights the sprawling reach of a new Texas law aimed at increasing oversight of minors’ use of social media and chat services.

Three experts in youth privacy regulations who have been following Paxton’s enforcement efforts say the new investigation should be treated credibly, and they believe it could result in companies agreeing to improve their practices. The alternative could be up to hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties per company. “When you bring all the statutes together, Texas has a pretty significant hammer,” says Paul Singer, a partner and section chair at the law firm Kelley Drye & Warren.

Spokespeople for Character.AI and Tumblr say they take safety issues seriously. Meta and WeChat declined to comment. Other companies under investigation did not respond to requests for comment.

Paxton launched his probe three days after the families of an 11-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy in Texas sued chatbot startup Character.AI, claiming the company designed its product in an unsafe way that exposed the kids to sexualized and violent responses. In October, a similar case was filed in Florida by the family of a 14-year-old who shot himself to death allegedly following conversations with a Character.AI chatbot. Character.AI later introduced an experience aimed at kids and plans to roll out parental controls.

Other services under investigation including Kik, Instagram, and Discord have faced public scrutiny over their use by children. But less so WeChat, a messaging app popular among Chinese Americans, and Quora, a forum for crowdsourcing information that’s recently expanded into AI chatbots.

Paxton’s interest in Rumble, a YouTube-like website popular among US conservative political commentators, is also perhaps unexpected given his track record of partisan views about social media companies. Rumble has touted itself as a haven for free expression, unlike platforms that engage in allegedly heavier content moderation. Paxton is a Republican and has criticized platforms that unfairly silence Texans.

The privacy experts who spoke with WIRED described Rumble, Quora, and WeChat as unusual suspects but declined to speculate on the rationale behind their inclusion in the investigation. Josh Golin, executive director of the nonprofit Fairplay, which advocates for digital safety for kids, says concerns aren’t always obvious. Few advocacy groups worried about Pinterest, for example, until the case of a British teen who died from self-harm following exposure to sensitive content on the platform, he says.

Paxton’s press release last month called his new investigation “a critical step toward ensuring that social media and AI companies comply with our laws designed to protect children from exploitation and harm.”

The United States Congress has never passed a comprehensive privacy law, and it hasn’t significantly updated child online safety rules in a quarter century. That has left state lawmakers and regulators to play a big role.

Paxton’s investigation centers on compliance with Texas’ Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment Act, or SCOPE, which went into effect in September. It applies to any website or app with social media or chat functions and that registers users under the age of 18, making it more expansive than the federal law, which covers only services catering to under-13 users.

SCOPE requires services to ask for users’ age and provide parents or guardians power over kids’ account settings and user data. Companies also are barred from selling information gathered about minors without parental permission. In October, Paxton sued TikTok for allegedly violating the law by providing inadequate parental controls and disclosing data without consent. TikTok has denied the allegations.

The investigation announced last month also referenced the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, or TDPSA, which became effective in July and requires parental consent before processing data about users younger than 13. Paxton’s office has asked the companies being investigated to detail their compliance with both the SCOPE Act and the TDPSA, according to legal demands obtained through the public records request.

In total, companies must answer eight questions by next week, including the number of Texas minors they count as users and have barred for registering an inaccurate birthdate. Lists of whom minors’ data is sold or shared with have to be turned over. Whether any companies have already responded to the demand couldn’t be learned.

Tech company lobbying groups are challenging the constitutionality of SCOPE Act in court. In August, they secured an initial and partial victory when a federal judge in Austin, Texas, ruled that a provision requiring companies to take steps to prevent minors from seeing self-harm and abusive content was too vague.

But even a complete win might not be a salve for tech companies. States including Maryland and New York are expected to enforce similar laws starting later this year, says Ariel Fox Johnson, an attorney and principal of the consultancy Digital Smarts Law & Policy. And state attorneys general could resort to pursuing narrower cases under their tried-and-true laws barring deceptive business practices. “What we see is often information gets shared or sold or disclosed in ways families didn’t expect or understand,” Johnson says. “As more laws are enacted that create firm requirements, it seems to be becoming more clear that not everybody is in compliance.”

Rumble Among 15 Targets of Texas Attorney General’s Child Privacy Probe

The fate of TikTok now rests in the hands of the US Supreme Court. If a law banning the social video app this month is upheld, it won’t disappear from your phone—but it will get messy fast.

The law says it will be “unlawful” for entities to “distribute, maintain or update” the app including its source code, or by “providing services” that allow it to keep running as it is now. This distribution, maintenance, or updates could be, the law says, by means of mobile app stores that can be accessed in the US or by “providing internet hosting services.”

“The law really deliberately avoided saying that it was illegal to have the app on your phone,” says Milton Mueller, a professor and cofounder of the Internet Governance Project at the Georgia Institute of Technology, who filed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in opposition of the ban. “Their attempt is to say nobody new can download it from the Apple or Google stores, and nobody who has it can update it through those stores,” Mueller says. “There’s nothing in the law that says ‘TikTok you must block US users,’ which is again interesting.”

If TikTok is removed from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store in the US, it will not be possible to directly install new updates that will add new features, fix bugs within the code, or quash security flaws. Over time, that means TikTok will stop functioning properly. Apple didn’t respond to WIRED’s request for comment, while Google declined to comment on what it will do if the law comes into effect.

The law’s other focus is on stopping “hosting” companies from providing services to TikTok—and the definition is pretty wide. Hosting companies “may include file hosting, domain name server hosting, cloud hosting, and virtual private server hosting,” the law says. Since the summer of 2022, as TikTok faced pressure about its Chinese ownership, the company has hosted US user data within Oracle’s cloud services. Oracle also did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment.

Even so, other systems such as content delivery networks, advertising networks, payment providers, and more are used as part of TikTok’s infrastructure. The law does not specifically mention these services, but differing legal readings could make them question whether they help to “maintain” or “distribute” TikTok’s fully functioning service.

Hall says a recent test of TikTok’s website showed 185 embedded domains on the page. “They pull in code, content from that array of third-party providers and their own domains too,” he says. “The apps will start to decay and rot as either services stop working, things like content distribution networks or services who feel like they can't take the risks of the ambiguous nature of the language or the potential enforcement by the incoming administration.”

There’s one internet infrastructure player that the ban does not specifically put pressure on: internet service providers. Countries such as Russia and China have developed censorship measures that allow them to block entire websites from being accessed through web bowsers. Mueller believes this omission by US lawmakers was likely deliberate, as it avoids setting up a Chinese-style internet firewall. “They knew that a system of ISP-based blocking and filtering would obviously be a form of First Amendment restriction,” he says.

**Avoiding a TikTok Ban**

While TikTok’s service in the US would likely degrade over time, there remain some potential ways around any ban—both for individuals and potentially also the company itself. How effective these measures would be likely depends on how motivated people are to keep using TikTok and what the company decides to do.

“TikTok has 170 million users,” says Alan Rozenshtein, an associate professor of law at the University of Minnesota, who is in favor of the law but says it is the “best of a bunch of bad options” relating to TikTok. “This law will not prevent every one of them from accessing TikTok. I don’t think that was ever the goal of the law. The law is to make it meaningfully harder to access TikTok.”

1Password on Monday announced that it has acquired software-as-a-service (SaaS) access management provider Trelica. Although terms of the transaction were not disclosed, 1Password said it is the largest acquisition by company revenue in its 18-year history.

1Password provides password management and other online identity-based services. This acquisition will build on 1Password's effort to expand its Extended Access Management offering, a platform that secures, identities, and manages access and permissions applications and devices, the company said. Launched last year, the platform is designed to ensure that employee devices, identities, and apps are trusted before granting access to enterprise resources.

Founded in 2018, UK-based Trelica offers a suite of tools for managing and securing SaaS applications, such as tools for employee onboarding and offboarding, discovering shadow IT deployments, SaaS operations, spend optimization, and access management. With shadow IT and SaaS sprawl increasing the risk of security breaches, security teams rely on automated application discovery tools to identify unmanaged apps, streamline user provisioning and access governance, and enforce security policies.

"Trelica addresses critical challenges that haven't been solved by traditional solutions like single sign-on (SSO), mobile device management (MDM) and SaaS security posture management (SSPM)," wrote 1Password CEO Jeff Shiner in a blog post announcing the deal. "These include provisioning and de-provisioning users, reclaiming unused licenses, monitoring permission drift, and adjusting access during role changes. Trelica prioritizes IT administrators' most time-consuming tasks while maintaining a secure environment."

With Shadow IT discovery capabilities from Trelica, the 1Password Extended Access Management platform will provide organizations with a repeatable framework for bringing unmanaged apps into full compliance under IT and security management, while empowering employees to use the tools that enhance their productivity, 1Password said in a statement.

Besides 1Password, Trelica lists over 300 SaaS integrations with SaaS providers, including Adobe, Atlassian, Cisco, Google, HubSpot, JFrog, LastPass, ManageEngine, Marketo, Microsoft, Okta, Pax8, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, Snyk, Sophos, TeamViewer, Workday, Workspace One, and Zoom.

Do Hyeong Kwon (Do Kwon), the 33-year-old co-founder and former CEO of Terraform Labs, has been extradited from Montenegro to the United States to face federal fraud charges. 

It is worth noting that in March 2023, **Do Kwon was apprehended** at an airport in Montenegro’s capital while attempting to use falsified documents. However, Kwon arrived in the U.S. on December 31, 2024, and appeared in a Manhattan court, where a superseding indictment alleges that he engaged in multiple schemes to deceive investors and fraudulently inflate the value of Terraform’s cryptocurrencies, resulting in over $40 billion in investor losses.

The indictment accuses Kwon of orchestrating various schemes between 2018 and 2022, including making false and misleading claims about the stability and long-term benefits of Terraform’s cryptocurrency stablecoin protocol, its **use of blockchain technology**, and the development of reliable financial technologies.

Kwon allegedly manipulated Terraform products to create the illusion of a functioning, stable, and decentralized financial system while personally benefiting from the inflated value of Terraform’s cryptocurrencies.

The **indictment** (PDF) against Do Kwon outlines several specific misrepresentations regarding the Terra ecosystem. Among them are the _**Stablecoin Misrepresentation**s_, where Kwon falsely claimed the Terra Protocol could maintain TerraUSD’s (UST) value at $1, despite secretly relying on a high-frequency trading firm to artificially support its peg.

Similarly, the _**LFG Misrepresentations**_ revealed Kwon’s false assertions about the Luna Foundation Guard (LFG) being independently managed, while he actually controlled it and misappropriated hundreds of millions of its assets.

Additionally, the _**Mirror Misrepresentations**_ showed Kwon’s claims of the Mirror Protocol being decentralized were untrue, as he and Terraform Labs manipulated synthetic asset prices through trading bots.

Other notable misrepresentations include the _**Chai Misrepresentations**_, where Kwon falsely claimed Terra blockchain’s integration with Chai facilitated billions of dollars in transactions, though Chai operated via traditional financial systems.

Lastly, the _**Genesis Coin Misrepresentations**_ revealed Kwon’s misuse of $145 million worth of stablecoins, originally allocated at Terra’s launch, to fund fake Chai blockchain transactions and manipulate synthetic asset prices through trading bots. Together, these indictments allege the deceptive practices used to artificially inflate the Terra ecosystem’s credibility and value.

It is worth noting that at its peak in the spring of 2022, the total apparent market value of UST and another Terraform cryptocurrency, LUNA, exceeded $50 billion. However, in May 2022, the value of UST and LUNA crashed, resulting in over $40 billion in investor losses. Following the crash, Kwon allegedly attempted to cover up his crimes by distributing a misleading “third-party audit” report and sought to launder the proceeds of his fraud through various means.

Your messages going back years are likely still lurking online, potentially exposing sensitive information you forgot existed. But there's no time like the present to do some digital decluttering.

If you're worried about possible expansions of government surveillance and access to your information, or simply want to do some digital purging so you're not saddled with old data, there are a bunch of concrete steps you can take to protect your digital privacy. Just as archeologists study carefully preserved tombs and ancient trash heaps to gain insight into historic communities, your long-forgotten digital footprint could be more revealing and sensitive than you realize. And while you can't control everything—particularly information stolen in breaches or gathered by data brokers—you probably have a digital attic full of old data that you can delete or download and save offline. First stop? Old message histories.

Chats are a good place to start your digital decluttering. Their real-time nature makes it easy to forget that if you don't have auto-delete turned on for a chat (or if a platform doesn't offer it), all of those “be there in 10 minutes,” “wait, what color is this dress???” and “welp, I have covid” messages are still knocking around years later. If you sent them on an end-to-end encrypted platform like Signal or WhatsApp, they only exist on your device and the devices of the other person or people you were chatting with. That means that for governments or bad actors to read them, they would need direct control of your device—a good level of protection, though not foolproof.

Crucially, though, messages that you sent on regular web apps like Slack, Facebook Messenger for most of its history, and Google Chat/Hangouts/Gchat are sitting on a cloud server somewhere. And while they're probably stored in an encrypted form to protect against theft, the platform itself has the keys to decrypt your data and would be able to comply with government requests for it, no matter how old the information is. Sure, all of those “u up?"s may not seem significant now, but years and years of chat histories can paint a very detailed picture of your life, associations, political beliefs, and past movements and activity.

“Doing a good digital cleaning from time to time is a great habit, especially with social media and old chat messages,” says Kenn White, security principal at the database developer MongoDB and director of the Open Crypto Audit Project. “Who you were five or 10 years ago is probably very different than who you are today, so it's worth asking yourself, ‘Do I really need those seven-year-old inside jokes and sarcastic posts? Do I need to keep old group chat messages and carry them forward to every new phone I get?’”

Some programs like Apple's Messages make it easy to auto-delete your chat histories after a set period of time. On iOS, go to **Settings** > **Apps** > **Messages** and then scroll and tap **Keep Messages**. Then choose whether to keep messages forever, for one year, or for 30 days before auto-deleting.

On the free version of Slack, data older than a year is automatically deleted. The company keeps data forever on paid plans, unless the administrator sets up rolling deletion. This is useful if you have an active Slack with your friends, but most people who use Slack at work don't make decisions about administrative policies and can't control deletion. Keep this in mind for any communication you do on an employer's platforms. You may be able to go through and delete messages or files one by one, but you likely won't have the access to make policy decisions about automatic or batch deletion.

Similarly, you may want to go through your chats on Android or iOS and delete old SMS conversations. Meta's Messenger now offers auto-delete options, but for your existing chats, you have to go down the list on desktop or in the Messenger mobile app and delete chats one by one. Meta's other chat platforms, Instagram Chat and WhatsApp, are similar, except that WhatsApp has been end-to-end encrypted since 2016 instead of adding the protection recently.

Consider whether you've spent time chatting on other social platforms as well. X, for example, has been through a lot of changes since Elon Musk bought Twitter more than two years ago and took the company private again. Musk promised that he would add end-to-end encryption to DMs on X, and eventually debuted an opt-in encryption feature with the paid tier of the platform, but the company doesn't definitively say that the tool offers full end-to-end encryption and it isn't open source for vetting. You can delete individual messages or go through your chat list and delete whole DM conversations if you want to pare down the data you're keeping on the platform.

If you've had Gmail for a long time, the messenger service “Google Talk,” once colloquially known as “Gchat,” may have a special place in your heart. And perhaps, over the years, you went through the saga in which Gchat—which was once known for interoperability with platforms like AIM—became the siloed Google chat platform Hangouts, and then transformed again into what is now called Google Chat. Your chats on this platform through the years are still hanging around, but they're not all in the same place.

The crucial thing to understand is that Gchat was fully integrated with Gmail and wasn't a separate platform, so your chat histories all saved in your mail archive. To find them now, open Gmail and **search for the phrase in:chats** (using no quotation marks). Hundreds or thousands of chats from May 2013 and earlier may pop up. They must be deleted directly from Gmail. After May 2013, Google migrated Gchat users to Hangouts, and that history has come forward into what is now Google Chat, so you can delete whole chats or individual messages there.

“Messages sent and received with history on in Google Talk from before May 2013 (the time when Google Hangouts launched) are stored in Gmail under the ‘in:chats’ label. Those messages are not available in Google Chat and can be deleted directly from Gmail only,” Google spokesperson Ross Richendrfer tells WIRED. “In terms of Hangouts data—which was merged with Chat—core Chat controls (including deletion) will work.”

There are lots of other chat apps to consider, too, where old messages may still be lurking. Think about Skype chat or GroupMe. And there's one other complicating factor when you declutter your messages: Most deletion features only delete data from your account, and the messages live on in the accounts of the person or people you were chatting with. To do a total digital detox you need to recruit your community to delete their message archives as well.

Additionally, you may feel sentimental about burning your letters (aka deleting all of your old chats). If you're sad about hitting that trash icon, consider downloading chat histories with your closest friends or other loved ones and storing them on an encrypted external hard drive before deleting them from the cloud. This way, you don't have to give up that slice of life completely, but the data isn't controlled by other entities anymore.

“Some apps, including Signal, give one the ability to set a ‘self-destruct’ time on messages, perhaps in hours or weeks. This is worth considering to reduce your exposure, particularly if you travel outside the country, are politically active, or in any way have a higher public profile,” MongoDB's White says. “It's easy to dismiss the potential of attacks on our personal data and physical safety as something that's only a concern for some James Bond–type scenarios, but the hard truth is that threats exist in many forms, both online and in person.”

Hey, Maybe It's Time to Delete Some Old Chat Histories

Proactive defenses, cross-sector collaboration, and resilience are key to combating increasingly sophisticated threats.

From the growing sophistication of zero-day exploits to the entrenchment of nation-state and cybercriminal alliances, 2024 delivered more evidence of how quickly the threat landscape continues to evolve. The year reinforced hard truths about the persistence of attackers and the systemic challenges of defense. We look back on some of the events that defined 2024 and the tactical insights that security teams can apply to stay ahead in the ongoing battle in 2025.

**Surging Zero-Day Exploits and Nation-State Collaboration**

Threat researchers continued to see a year-over-year increase of zero days. Recent analysis by Mandiant of 138 vulnerabilities that were disclosed in 2023 found the majority (97) were exploited as zero-days — an increase from 2022. Tom Kellermann, senior vice president of cyber strategy at Contrast Security, expects that number to increase in 2024.

The growth is a direct result of geopolitical tensions, he says. Nation-state actors, particularly China, are exploiting these types of vulnerabilities at unprecedented rates.

"The Chinese specifically have been doing tremendous research into exploiting zero-days and discovering them," Kellermann says. "I think everyone's kind of on their back foot when dealing with this because traditional cybersecurity defenses can't thwart those attacks."

The rise in these kinds of attacks includes a new trend in 2024: collaboration or coordination between nation-states and cybercrime rings, says Stephan Jou, senior director of security analytics at OpenText Cybersecurity.

"In this model, an attack with nation-state characteristics is launched at the same time, or followed closely by, an attack on the same target by an independent for-profit threat actor. Russia, for example, has been seen to collaborate with malware-as-a-service gangs, including Killnet, LokiBot, Gumblar, Pony Loader, and Amadey. China has entered similar relationships with the Storm-0558 and Red Relay cybercrime rings, typically to support its geopolitical agenda in the South China Sea."

Chester Wisniewski, global field CTO at Sophos, says China-sponsored attackers have developed assembly-line zero-day exploits shared through state-mandated disclosure laws. Attackers initially used zero-days in targeted attacks, then escalated them to widespread exploitation to cover their tracks. Proactive patch management and collaboration between vendors and organizations to mitigate threats is critical, he says.

"The real problem is this accumulation of stuff that's not getting patched," Wisniewski says. "We just keep launching more equipment out there onto the Internet. And it's getting more and more polluted, and nobody's responsible for taking care of it."

Jou agrees and says the lesson here is that defense against even sophisticated attacks comes back to the same basics: patch management, endpoint protection, email security, awareness training, and backup and disaster recovery planning.

"By ensuring that these unglamorous but essential best practices are in place, security teams can rob threat actors of many of their favorite tactics to abuse networks and businesses," he says.

**Resiliency Planning Needs More Focus**

Ransomware attacks in 2024 highlighted the fragility of supply chains and business continuity. Ransomware operators are now targeting service providers and supply chain networks, Wisniewski says. A cyberattack on Ahold Delhaize, the parent company of major US supermarket chains, including Stop & Shop, Hannaford, Food Lion, and Giant Food, disrupted services across its network in November, impacting more than 2,000 stores. For several days, customers had issues with online grocery delivery, offline websites, and limited pharmacy services.

Improving business continuity strategies to include modern segmentation tools can help minimize operational disruptions during incidents, Wisniewski says.

"When one part of a supply chain goes down, it impacts thousands of businesses," he says. "This amplifies the economic and operational pressure to comply with attackers' demands. You can't plan never to fail, but you can plan to fail gracefully."

Another headline-making business continuity incident this year was the CrowdStrike outage. In July, the company released a faulty software update that affected approximately 8.5 million devices running the Windows operating system. The glitch triggered widespread system crashes that resulted in multiple disruptions, particularly in the travel industry. Delta Air Lines was forced to cancel thousands of flights due to system disruptions. 

The event dominated news cycles for several days. In its wake, analysts pointed to the critical need for better process adherence and visibility. But Dror Liwer, cofounder of Coro, says it also highlights a need for security leaders to  effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders — whether technical teams, business executives, or external parties — when managing the fallout of a large-scale incident.

**Critical Infrastructure Is a Growing Target**

Attacks on critical infrastructure reached new levels in 2024. In September, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a notice that government-run water systems were at risk of attack by nation-states after officials reported a cybersecurity issue at a facility in Arkansas City, Kansas, which was forced to switch to manual operations while the situation was resolved.

Barry Mainz, CEO of Forescout, says cyberattacks are evolving to target critical services, like municipal water authorities and airport landing systems. This year made it clear that attackers are shifting their focus from well-protected facilities to more vulnerable upstream systems, like water supplies and power grids, he says.

"If you just zoom out a bit and look at where the vulnerabilities are, the bad actors are saying, 'Well, it's a lot harder now since people are spending money to secure certain IT functions. We're going to go down the food chain a little bit,'" Mainz says.

One of the key challenges in securing critical infrastructure is the inherent complexity of operational environments. Many industrial systems operate using legacy equipment that was never designed with cybersecurity in mind. In addition, there is often a lack of visibility into connected devices within these environments, which can make detecting threats extremely difficult.

"I think the lesson is we've got to invest in a cybersecurity strategy for not only IT systems but \[operational technology\] systems," Mainz says. "And also we need to think structurally about how we manage those systems because the people that actually manage those OT systems, they're not IT professionals.”

A better approach, he says, involves adopting advanced monitoring and threat detection tools as well as fostering collaboration between IT and OT teams. By breaking down silos and improving communication, organizations can better address the unique security requirements of critical infrastructure. Mainz pointed to the importance of government and private-sector partnerships in bolstering defenses.

**Telecom Can't Be Trusted**

We wrap up 2024 with news that Salt Typhoon, a cyber-espionage group allegedly linked to the Chinese government, has successfully infiltrated telecommunications networks in multiple countries. In the US alone, FBI officials say at least eight major telecom companies, including AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, were compromised. The group gained access to sensitive data, such as call logs, unencrypted text messages, and, in some cases, live call audio. The FBI recommended that Americans use encrypted messaging apps, like Signal and WhatsApp, to ensure their communications stay hidden.

The ongoing issues around nation-state attackers and their use of telecom is one of his biggest worries heading into 2025, Kellermann says. He also points to T-Mobile's acquisition of Sprint in 2020, which he says is concerning because "Sprint used to be the classified backbone network of the US government." This means that if there are security vulnerabilities within T-Mobile's infrastructure, they could potentially compromise sensitive government communications or systems that were part of Sprint's legacy network. 

"I think the people are ignoring that and are not paying attention fully," he says.
