Tracked as **CVE-2023-5129**, the issue has been given the maximum severity score of 10.0 on the CVSS rating system. It has been described as an issue rooted in the Huffman coding algorithm -

_With a specially crafted WebP lossless file, libwebp may write data out of bounds to the heap. The ReadHuffmanCodes() function allocates the HuffmanCode buffer with a size that comes from an array of precomputed sizes: kTableSize. The color\_cache\_bits value defines which size to use. The kTableSize array only takes into account sizes for 8-bit first-level table lookups but not second-level table lookups. libwebp allows codes that are up to 15-bit (MAX\_ALLOWED\_CODE\_LENGTH). When BuildHuffmanTable() attempts to fill the second-level tables it may write data out-of-bounds. The OOB write to the undersized array happens in ReplicateValue._

The development comes after Apple, Google, and Mozilla released fixes to contain a bug – tracked separately as CVE-2023-41064 and CVE-2023-4863 – that could cause arbitrary code execution when processing a specially crafted image. Both flaws are suspected to address the same underlying problem in the library.

According to the Citizen Lab, CVE-2023-41064 is said to have been chained with 2023-41061 as part of a zero-click iMessage exploit chain named BLASTPASS to deploy a mercenary spyware known as Pegasus. Additional technical details are currently unknown.

But the decision to "wrongly scope" CVE-2023-4863 as a vulnerability in Google Chrome belied the fact that it also virtually affects every other application that relies on the libwebp library to process WebP images, indicating it had a broader impact than previously thought.

An analysis from Rezillion last week revealed a laundry list of widely used applications, code libraries, frameworks, and operating systems that are vulnerable to CVE-2023-4863.

"This package stands out for its efficiency, outperforming JPEG and PNG in terms of size and speed," the company said. "Consequently, a multitude of software, applications, and packages have adopted this library, or even adopted packages that libwebp is their dependency."

"The sheer prevalence of libwebp extends the attack surface significantly, raising serious concerns for both users and organizations."

The disclosure arrives as Google expanded fixes for CVE-2023-4863 to include the Stable channel for ChromeOS and ChromeOS Flex with the release of version 15572.50.0 (browser version 117.0.5938.115).

It also follows new details published by Google Project Zero regarding the in-the-wild exploitation of CVE-2023-0266 and CVE-2023-26083 in December 2022 by commercial spyware vendors to target Android devices from Samsung in the U.A.E. and obtain kernel arbitrary read/write access.

The flaws are believed to have been put to use alongside three other flaws – CVE-2022-4262, CVE-2022-3038, CVE-2022-22706 – by a customer or partner of a Spanish spyware company known as Variston IT.

"It is also particularly noteworthy that this attacker created an exploit chain using multiple bugs from kernel GPU drivers," security researcher Seth Jenkins said. "These third-party Android drivers have varying degrees of code quality and regularity of maintenance, and this represents a notable opportunity for attackers."

Microsoft is officially rolling out support for passkeys in Windows 11 today as part of a major update to the desktop operating system.

The feature allows users to login to websites and applications without having to provide a username and password, instead relying on their device PIN or biometric information to complete the step.

Based on FIDO standards, Passkeys were first announced in May 2022 as a replacement for passwords in a manner that's both strong and phishing-resistant. It has since been adopted by Apple, Google, and a number of other services in recent months.

While the tech giant added passkey management in the Windows Insider program back in June 2023, the development marks the feature's general availability.

"Passkeys are the cross-platform future of secure sign-in management," David Weston, vice president of enterprise and OS Security, said. "A passkey creates a unique, unguessable cryptographic credential that is securely stored on your device."

Passkeys offer a number of benefits in that they are unique to each website or app, and eliminate the need for setting up complex passwords and the hassle of remembering them. They are also synced across devices within the same operating system (or ecosystem), making the sign-in process more easier.

On Windows, passkeys are created through Windows Hello. Users can manage their saved passkeys by heading to Start > Settings > Accounts > Passkeys.

Alongside the announcement, Microsoft said it's also bringing Windows Hello for Business to enterprise-managed Windows 11 devices so as to secure user identities by enabling IT teams to set a policy for Microsoft Entra ID joined machines.

Two other notable enterprise-related features include enhancements to the built-in Windows Firewall and a new Custom App Control option to ensure that only approved and trusted apps are allowed onto devices and protect endpoints from rogue code.

History was created last November when OpenAI launched its flagship chatbot, **ChatGPT**. The product took the internet world by storm, making generating text and solving queries hassle-free.

The AI firm has been improving its features, and now it has announced adding a voice identification capability dubbed Whisper to the already feature-rich chatbot. For your information, **Whisper** is the chatbot’s speech recognition system that can perform various functions, such as settling a debate or creating a bedtime story. OpenAI has upgraded the app to use its reasoning skills for answering queries about images. 

For example, it can offer insight into various image types, including documents containing pictures or text, photos, and screenshots. It can also troubleshoot when inquired about any issue, such as why the grill isn’t working or how to plan a meal. Moreover, the chatbot can analyze complex graphs.

 “You can now use voice to engage in a back-and-forth conversation with your assistant,” OpenAI explained when **announcing** the new iOS and Android upgrade.

ChatGPT is tweaked with a new open-source text-to-speech model and will now generate human-like audio after listening to a few seconds-long sample speech or text. This means the world’s favorite chatbot will become chattier now.

Users can directly send audio queries; the app will respond with a synthesized voice. Users can choose between five different voices to interact with the chatbot. To create these voices, **OpenAI** collaborated with professional voice artists.

In addition, the new version will feature visual smarts, allowing users to upload/snap a photo from ChatGPT, and it will quickly generate a description of the image, just like it happens with **Google Lens**. Users can also interact with the app regarding selected images or parts of an image through the newly added drawing tool using voice commands. OpenAI has added audio/visual data feed into its chatbot’s machine-learning model to make it as smart as a human.

The addition of such a wide range of speaking and image-analyzing features indicates that OpenAI is working constantly on its AI models to make them more intuitive and interactive. ChatGPT can easily compete with Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri with the new features and may even become much more attractive to consumers than other AI chatbots with its rich data feed.

ChatGPT’s new voice generation tech will also allow other companies to license this technology as it has been created in-house by OpenAI. For instance, Spotify can use OpenAI’s speech synthesis algorithms to offer a podcast translation feature, delivering the content in different languages but in the original podcaster’s voice.

The new features will be available today only for the subscription-based version of ChatGPT, at $20 per month. It will be available in all the markets where ChatGPT is available, but currently, the voice feature will work in English.
