Last month, the TikTok user TracketPacer posted a video online called “Network Engineering Facts to Impress No One at Zero Parties.”  TracketPacer regularly posts fun, educational content about how the Internet operates. The account is run by a network engineer named Lexie Cooper, who has worked in a network operations center, or NOC, and who’s earned her Cisco Certified Network Associate certificate, or CCNA. 

In the video, Cooper told listeners about the first spam email being sent over Arpanet, about how an IP address doesn't reveal _that much_ about you, and about how Ethernet isn't really a cable—it's a protocol. But amidst Cooper's bite-sized factoids, a pair of comments she made about something else—the gender gap in the technology industry—set off a torrent of anger. 

As Cooper said in her video:   

> “There are very few women in tech because there’s a pervasive cultural idea that men are more logical than women and therefor better at technical, 'computery' things.”

This, the Internet decided, would not stand. 

The IT industry is “not dominated by men, well actually, the women it self just few of them WANT to be engineer. So it’s not man fault," said one commenter. 

“No one thinks it’s because women can’t be logical. They’re finally figuring out those liberal arts degrees are worthless," said another. 

“The women not in computers fact is BS cuz the field was considered nerdy and uncool until shows like Big Bang Theory made it cool!” said yet another. 

The unfortunate reality facing many women in tech today is that, when they publicly address the gender gap in their field, they receive dozens of comments online that not only deny the reasons _for_ the gender gap, but also, together, likely contribute _to_ the gender gap. Nobody wants to work in a field where they aren't taken seriously, but that's what is happening. 

Today, on the Lock and Code podcast with host David Ruiz, we speak with Cooper about the gender gap in technology, what she did with the negative comments she received, and what, if anything, could help make technology a more welcoming space for women. One easy lesson, she said:

Cisco has warned of two security vulnerabilities affecting end-of-life (EoL) Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, and RV082 routers that it said will not be fixed, even as it acknowledged the public availability of proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit.

The issues are rooted in the router's web-based management interface, enabling a remote adversary to sidestep authentication or execute malicious commands on the underlying operating system.

The most severe of the two is CVE-2023-20025 (CVSS score: 9.0), which is the result of improper validation of user input within incoming HTTP packets.

A threat actor could exploit it remotely by sending a specially crafted HTTP request to vulnerable routers' web-based management interface to bypass authentication and obtain elevated permissions.

The lack of adequate validation is also the reason behind the second flaw tracked as CVE-2023-20026 (CVSS score: 6.5), permitting an attacker with valid admin credentials to achieve root-level privileges and access unauthorized data.

"Cisco has not released and will not release software updates to address the vulnerabilities," the company said. "Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, and RV082 Routers have entered the end-of-life process."

As workarounds, administrators are recommended to disable remote management and block access to ports 443 and 60443. That said, Cisco is cautioning users to "determine the applicability and effectiveness \[of the mitigation\] in their own environment and under their own use conditions."

Hou Liuyang of Qihoo 360 Netlab has been credited with discovering and reporting the flaws to Cisco.

The network equipment major further noted that while it's aware of PoC code in the wild, it said that it has not observed any malicious use of the vulnerabilities in real-world attacks.

Slack suffered a security breach recently, “involving unauthorized access to a subset of Slack’s code repositories” according to the messaging platform.

The company said that although no customers were affected, an internal investigation revealed that an unknown actor downloaded private code repositories on or around December 27.

“We discovered that a limited number of Slack employee tokens were stolen and misused to gain access to our externally hosted GitHub repository,” a statement read.

“No downloaded repositories contained customer data, means to access customer data or Slack’s primary codebase.”

Identity management company Okta also fell victim to a breach when an unknown actor accessed its code repositories.

The incident occurred “in early December 2022”, the vendor said, without confirming whether or not any data was stolen.

It did confirm that it “promptly placed temporary restrictions on access to Okta GitHub repositories and suspended all GitHub integrations with third-party applications”.

And over in the US, a government watchdog spent $15,000 to build a password-cracking program – only to discover employees were using easily-guessable credentials all along.

The complicated software, financed by the Department of the Interior, was designed to take on tasks such as recovering hashed passwords.

However it ultimately found that it was able to recover nearly 14,000 employee passwords, – 16% of all department accounts – due to “easily cracked passwords, lack of multifactor authentication, and other failures”.

Among other stories from The Daily Swig in recent days were secure messaging app Threema disputing the seriousness of flaws in its software, developers being urged to rotate secrets in CircleCI due to a security breach, and cross-origin resource (CORS) misconfigurations in the environments of enterprises including Tesla that left internal networks vulnerable.

**Research and attack techniques**

*   Researchers from Sonarsource discovered a command injection vulnerability as well as an authentication bypass vulnerability in open source web-based monitoring tool Cacti which allowed unauthenticated exploitation.
*   A malicious Python file found on the PyPi repository adds backdoor and data exfiltration features to what appears to be a legitimate SDK (software development kit) client from security firm SentinelOne, researchers at ReversingLabs have reported.
*   Also concerning PyPi, researcher Tom Forbes found 57 valid AWS keys present on the Python package index belonging to Amazon, Intel, and other organizations by scanning new packages with GitHub Actions.
*   A research team from Imperva demonstrated how they discovered a vulnerability in Google Chrome that led to the theft of sensitive files, such as crypto wallets and cloud provider credentials.
*   And Harsh Bothra from Cobalt released this handy write up on how pen testers can spot prototype pollution-style attacks.
**Bug bounty/vulnerability disclosure**

*   Researcher Matt Kunze netted a $107,500 bug bounty reward from Google for reporting vulnerabilities in the Google Home Mini smart speaker which allowed him to access the microphone on the device and make arbitrary HTTP requests on the local network.
*   Security firm CloudSek released BeVigil, a tool to enable bug bounty hunters to find and report vulnerabilities in mobile apps.
*   And hacker Jerry Gamblin published this extensive guide on the CVE year in review, featuring data on assigned vulnerabilities from the year 2022.
**New open source infosec/hacking tools**

*   GCP Goat is a vulnerable cloud infrastructure tool featuring the latest released OWASP Top 10 web application security risks and other misconfiguration, designed to help test developers test their code in a cloud environment.
*   Another cloud-based tool, PEACH is a tenant isolation framework for cloud applications to help protect against malicious actors accessing “data belonging to other customers”, for example, in cases such as ChaosDB, ExtraReplica, and AttachMe.
*   Open source tool sbom-utility has been released, an API platform for validating, querying, updating, and managing standardized SBOMs.
**For devs**

*   Exact Realty has released this blog post explaining how developers can defend against introducing cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities into websites.
*   Google’s Chromium project now supports the use of third-party Rust libraries from C++, and will include Rust code in the Chrome binary “within the next year”.
**For fun**

Finally, SplendidData’s bonkers bug bounty program policy was subject to online infosec scrutiny recently.

The rules date back to at least early 2021, however it still sparked a lively discussion thread on Twitter over the last week as some of its questionable terms were highlighted.

Its policy boasts guidance such as ‘we will not respond to your request’ and that the company ‘cannot guarantee’ that no legal action will be taken, even if the vulnerability was disclosed responsibly.

Unsurprisingly, this spread like wildfire on infosec Twitter with one user called TJ joking: “I like the “we MIGHT sue you, idk” aspect… adds a little excitement to life.”

With the $7.2M contract, Cloudflare will enhance resilience and simplify security for .gov domain users.

Cisco ASIG and Cisco Talos recently discovered code execution vulnerabilities in QT QML.

Qt is a popular software suite primarily used to create graphical user interfaces. It also contains several supporting libraries which all aim to enable cross-platform application development with a unified programming API.

QT has responded to vulnerability notifications with this statement: “We have analyzed your report, and our evaluation is that this is not a security issue, even though it is a real bug. Qt’s QML and JavaScript support is explicitly not designed for untrusted content... Each application that is passing untrusted input to QtQml needs to have an advisory instead and must thoroughly check their inputs.”

This advisory concerns:

TALOS-2022-1617 (CVE-2022-40983), in which Javascript code can trigger an integer overflow during memory allocation, which can lead to arbitrary code execution. A target application would need to access a malicious web page to trigger this vulnerability.

Secondarily, TALOS-2022-1650 (CVE-2022-43591) can involve an out-of-bounds memory access, leading to arbitrary code execution.

Cisco Talos believes these are potential security issues and notified QT of the issues all in adherence to Cisco’s vulnerability disclosure policy.

Users are encouraged to update this affected product as soon as possible: Qt Project Qt 6.3.2. Talos tested and confirmed this version of QT could be exploited by this vulnerability.

The following Snort rules will detect exploitation attempts against this vulnerability: 60690-60691 and 60912-60913.
