It was just over one year ago, May 28, 2012, to be exact, that I transitioned from running active MSRC cases and writing bulletins to my current role managing software security incidents. A lot has changed in that year*- _and I’ve dealt with some interesting issues during my tenure* - _but our goal of providing the best customer protections possible remains a constant.

Integer overflow in the rsCStrExtendBuf function in runtime/stringbuf.c in the imfile module in rsyslog 4.x before 4.6.6, 5.x before 5.7.4, and 6.x before 6.1.4 allows local users to cause a denial of service (daemon hang) via a large file, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

native/unix/native/jsvc-unix.c in jsvc in the Daemon component 1.0.3 through 1.0.6 in Apache Commons, as used in Apache Tomcat 5.5.32 through 5.5.33, 6.0.30 through 6.0.32, and 7.0.x before 7.0.20 on Linux, does not drop capabilities, which allows remote attackers to bypass read permissions for files via a request to an application.

Race condition in the mounting process in vmware-mount in VMware Workstation 7.x before 7.1.2 build 301548 on Linux, VMware Player 3.1.x before 3.1.2 build 301548 on Linux, VMware Server 2.0.2 on Linux, and VMware Fusion 3.1.x before 3.1.2 build 332101 allows host OS users to gain privileges via vectors involving temporary files.
