The number of additions to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog is growing quickly, but even silent changes to already-documented flaws can help security teams prioritize.

B-SIDES LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas – Wednesday, Aug. 7 – Organizations that use the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog to prioritize patching are likely missing silent changes to the list that could indicate that an issue's severity has changed, according to an analysis presented at the BSides Las Vegas conference on Aug. 7.

The KEV catalog — which currently consists of more than 1,140 vulnerabilities that are known to have been exploited in the wild — tracks software flaws by their Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) identifier, records the date when the vulnerability was confirmed in the wild and has a flag that indicates whether ransomware groups are using the security issues.

Yet, specific changes to the data — such as uncommonly short times to remediate vulnerabilities and changes to the ransomware status — can give security teams valuable information, the analysis stated.

Unfortunately, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which manages the list, does not often call out these changes and outliers, says Glenn Thorpe, senior director of security research and detection engineering at GreyNoise Intelligence.

"We who are not bound by its directives forget that this is actually a to-do list," he says, adding: "So, if folks are actually using this to prioritize remediation or some kind of process, they need to know \[when\] it is updated silently."

The KEV catalog, introduced in November 2021 with 290 exploited vulnerabilities, is maintained by CISA and gives organizations the information necessary to prioritize patching flaws that are currently under attack. The list, however, does not rank the severity of issues, and vulnerabilities are often not added until well after the initial evidence of exploitation comes to light.

**Surge From a Cyber Conflict**

While less than 3 years old, the KEV catalog has already passed through three periods, Thorpe says. The original catalog had 287 vulnerabilities, which had an average age — the time between the release of the CVE and the vulnerability's addition to the KEV list — of 591 days. Then, during a 109-day period in early 2022 and the initial months of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a massive stockpile of vulnerabilities was exploited, encompassing 396 issues with an average age of 1,898 days.

Since mid-2022, 453 newly exploited vulnerabilities have been discovered, with an average age of 567 days.

"There is this thought that maybe the numbers have gone down, because the Russia-Ukraine conflict has dragged on so long," he says. "But I \[feel that\] when it ends, each side will looking for vulnerabilities and stockpiling once again."

Five organizations — Microsoft, Apple, Cisco, Adobe, and Google — account for about half of all vulnerabilities on the list, demonstrating cyberattackers' penchant for major software platforms.

**Pay Attention to Friday Updates**

While any vulnerability in the KEV catalog should likely be patched as soon as possible, companies may want to prioritize those being used in ransomware campaigns. The list has a flag designating whether CISA has confirmed use of a particular flaw by ransomware gangs. However, at least 41 times, that flag has been changed to "known" — indicating ransomware use — after the vulnerability's addition to the list without explicit notification.

Perhaps more critical for prioritization is the "due date" for fixing a vulnerability, which informs federal agencies of the date by which the issue must be remediated. While the vast majority of vulnerabilities have a 21-day requirement, since late 2023, CISA has set shorter remediation deadlines for specific vulnerabilities. The shorter patching deadlines are typically for more critical appliances that are connected to a networks, such as the severe Ivanti vulnerabilities, as well as issues in Juniper routers and Cisco devices and Atlassian's Confluence server, GreyNoise's Thorpe says.

In fact, another data point suggests that CISA made other changes to how it handles KEV-catalog announcements in late 2023. Around the same time that CISA had assigned shorter deadlines, the agency also began foregoing the release of any list updates on Fridays, except in two specific cases, the analysis found.

"Either there was a decision made to prioritize these a little differently, or they ... were kind of figuring out how to prioritize these differently, because the list is getting big," Thorpe says.

Organizations can use the policy changes inferred from the way CISA updates the KEV catalog to understand which issues the agency considers most critical. A KEV update released on a Friday should be considered significant, as should a vulnerability with a due date less than 21 days away. Finally, Thorpe says, updates to the known ransomware usage field are another signal that security teams should pay attention to.

An unnamed media organization in South Asia was targeted in November 20233 using a previously undocumented Go-based backdoor called GoGra.

"GoGra is written in Go and uses the Microsoft Graph API to interact with a command-and-control (C&C) server hosted on Microsoft mail services," Symantec, part of Broadcom, said in a report shared with The Hacker News.

It's currently not clear how it's delivered to target environments, GoGra is specifically configured to read messages from an Outlook username "FNU LNU" whose subject line starts with the word "Input."

The message contents are then decrypted using the AES-256 algorithm in Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) mode using a key, following which it executes the commands via cmd.exe.

The results of the operation are then encrypted and sent to the same user with the subject "Output."

GoGra is said to be the work of a nation-state hacking group known as Harvester owing to its similarities to a custom .NET implant named Graphon that also utilizes the Graph API for C&C purposes.

The development comes as threat actors are increasingly taking advantage of legitimate cloud services to stay low-key and avoid having to purchase dedicated infrastructure.

Some of the other new malware families that have employed the technique are listed below -

*   A previously unseen data exfiltration tool deployed by Firefly in a cyber attack targeting a military organization in Southeast Asia. The harvested information is uploaded to Google Drive using a hard-coded refresh token.

*   A new backdoor dubbed Grager was deployed against three organizations in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam in April 2024. It uses the Graph API to communicate with a C&C server hosted on Microsoft OneDrive. The activity has been tentatively linked to a suspected Chinese threat actor tracked as UNC5330.

*   A backdoor known as MoonTag contains functionality for communicating with the Graph API and is attributed to a Chinese-speaking threat actor

*   A backdoor called Onedrivetools has been used against IT services companies in the U.S. and Europe. It uses the Graph API to interact with a C&C server hosted on OneDrive to execute received commands and save the output to OneDrive.

"Although leveraging cloud services for command and control is not a new technique, more and more attackers have started to use it recently," Symantec said, pointing to malware like BLUELIGHT, Graphite, Graphican, and BirdyClient.

"The number of actors now deploying threats that leverage cloud services suggests that espionage actors are clearly studying threats created by other groups and mimicking what they perceive to be successful techniques."

New Go-based Backdoor GoGra Targets South Asian Media Organization

Cybersecurity researchers have lifted the lid on a new technique adopted by threat actors behind the Chameleon Android banking trojan targeting users in Canada by masquerading as a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) app.

Cybersecurity researchers have lifted the lid on a new technique adopted by threat actors behind the Chameleon Android banking trojan targeting users in Canada by masquerading as a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) app.

"Chameleon was seen masquerading as a CRM app, targeting a Canadian restaurant chain operating internationally," Dutch security outfit ThreatFabric said in a technical report published Monday.

The campaign, spotted in July 2024, targeted customers in Canada and Europe, indicating an expansion of its victimology footprint from Australia, Italy, Poland, and the U.K.

The use of CRM-related themes for the malicious dropper apps containing the malware points to the targets being customers in the hospitality sector and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) employees.

The dropper artifacts are also designed to bypass Restricted Settings imposed by Google in Android 13 and later in order to prevent sideloaded apps from requesting for dangerous permissions (e.g., accessibility services), a technique previously employed by SecuriDroper and Brokewell.

Once installed, the app displays a fake login page for a CRM tool and then displays a bogus error message urging the victims to reinstall the app, when, in reality, it deploys the Chameleon payload.

This step is followed by loading the phony CRM web page again, this time asking them to complete the login process, only to display a different error message stating "Your account is not activated yet. Contact the HR department."

Chameleon is equipped to conduct on-device fraud (ODF) and fraudulently transfer users' funds, while also leveraging overlays and its wide-ranging permissions to harvest credentials, contact lists, SMS messages, and geolocation information.

"If the attackers succeed in infecting a device with access to corporate banking, Chameleon gets access to business banking accounts and poses a significant risk to the organization," ThreatFabric said. "The increased likelihood of such access for employees whose roles involve CRM is the likely reason behind the choice of the masquerading during this latest campaign."

The development comes weeks after IBM X-Force detailed a Latin American banking malware campaign undertaken by the CyberCartel group to steal credentials and financial data as well as deliver a trojan named Caiman by means of malicious Google Chrome extensions.

"The ultimate objective of these malicious activities is to install a harmful browser plugin on the victim's browser and use the Man-in-the-Browser technique," the company said.

"This allows the attackers to illegally collect sensitive banking information, along with other relevant data such as compromised machine information and on-demand screenshots. Updates and configurations are disseminated via a Telegram channel by the threat actors."

Chameleon Android Banking Trojan Targets Users Through Fake CRM App

Google has issued security updates for 46 vulnerabilities, including a patch for a remote code execution flaw which has been used in limited targeted attacks.

Google has released patches for 46 vulnerabilities in Android, including a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability that it says has been used in limited, targeted attacks.

You can find your device’s Android version number, security update level, and Google Play system level in your Settings app. You’ll get notifications when updates are available for you, but you can also check for updates.

If your Android phone is at patch level 2024-08-01 or later then the issues discussed below have been fixed. The updates have been made available for Android 12, 12L, 13, and 14. Android partners, such as Samsung, Sony, etc, are notified of all issues at least a month before publication, however, this doesn’t always mean that the patches are available for devices from all vendors.

For most Android devices, you can check for new updates like this: Under **About phone** or **About device** you can tap on **Software updates**, although there may be slight differences based on the brand, type, and Android version.

**Technical details**

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database lists publicly disclosed computer security flaws. The actively exploited vulnerability is listed as:

CVE-2024-36971 is a use after free (UAF) vulnerability in the Linux kernel. The vulnerability could lead to remote code execution with System execution privileges needed.

This Linux kernel vulnerability affects the Android OS because the Android kernel is based on an upstream Linux Long Term Supported (LTS) kernel. This kernel is like the engine of the operating system, managing the hardware and basic functions.

The Android kernel is based on a version of the Linux kernel, which is a popular core for many operating systems. Specifically, Android uses a version of the Linux kernel that is designated as “Long Term Supported” (LTS). This means it’s a version that gets updates and fixes for a longer period than regular versions, ensuring it stays secure and stable over time.

UAF is a type of vulnerability that happens when a program incorrectly handles its memory. When a program frees up a piece of memory but still tries to use it afterward, an attacker can exploit this mistake. This can cause the program to crash, behave unpredictably, or even run harmful code. In this case it allows the attacker to remotely execute code on the device if they have enough privileges.

Attackers would need to gain the needed privileges to use this vulnerability by combining it with other vulnerabilities.
